A Taste of India: Rasika

Hey ya’ll! I know technically I didn’t blog for three days, which breaks my resolution, but I had no wifi or internet connection where I was, so I’m not going to count it! The weird thing is that I was in Washington DC, so you would assume that I would have wifi, but nope. They charged you a lot of money to access the hotel wifi, yep not doing it. Ya’ll had to live a few days without my awesomeness, which I know is pretty hard. So for the next few days I’m going to recap my trip to DC (which I love btw). Seriously I think I could live there. It would be a great place for a registered dietitian and there are sports teams (did I mention that I have an insane crush on the super sexy John Wall). So we got in around 4 to Baltimore and had to drive to DC. We didn’t have dinner reservations until about 9:45, so we tried to figure out what to do in the meantime.

Say hello to my little friend. Lets stop lying to ourselves because this is actually HUGE. We ended up going to Moe’s Seafood in order to get a little snack to hold us over till 9:45. My younger brother and I ended up splitting an order of crab cakes. I was totally expecting some small dinky thing, but no these were enormous monsters of crab. Delicious succulent crab that is. The crab was so fresh, duh its Maryland, and it was packed with flavor. There wasn’t an overwhelming amount of breadcrumbs, which was nice because you mainly tasted the herbs and the crab. I was in heaven. I am a sucker for good seafood, especially crab cakes!

My dad ended up getting an order of clams with some type of parmesan crust on top. They looked really good, but since there was only three I didn’t have any. That didn’t stop my little brother from taking one though. He seriously will take all your food even if you are in the middle of eating it. Happened multiple times throughout the trip. After our quick seafood snack, we hopped in our rental car and drove towards DC.

Our 9:45 pm dinner reservations were at an Indian restaurant called Rasika. I had found this place on Eater’s guide to DC and from reviews on yelp. This was the best place to go. If you are ever in DC, I would definitely recommend going here. I want to ride the train down from NYC just to go here (lies because I also want to explore Georgetown more). Anyways this dish was Mango Shrimp. It was simplistic, but packed with tons of flavor. I love the hint of the mango in the glaze on the shrimp. The vegetable medley that came along with it went well and provided a more cooling effect with the hot shrimp.

Oh you sweet potato samosas, how I love thee. You can’t really go wrong with anything that is wrapped in a fried wonton like wrapper. This was no exception. The sweet potato was a creamy mixture inside that went well with the crunch of the fried outside. The sweetness from the cranberry chutney was a nice addition to the dish. It provided a bit of a sour acidic flavor that balanced off the sweetness from the potato.

Oh Palak Chaat, you are what dreams are made of. Really though. I have been craving this ever since. I can’t wait to look for this in NYC. That is how good it is. The spinach is crispy from being fried in hot oil. There is yogurt, tamarind, and dates in the mixture. There is also chopped tomatoes and red onion. I don’t think I can really explain this dish good enough to give it the justice that it deserves. The crunch of the spinach provides a good texture to be paired with the creamy smoothness of the yogurt. It was the most amazing thing. I am definitely going to try to remix this recipe into a healthier version (although the only bad thing is that it is fried).

Hello Cauliflower Bezule. This was fried cauliflower. Hmmm there seems to be a trend here of fried food. What can I say? We southerners love to consume some fried foods. I do love cauliflower, so this was a definite thing that I had to get on the menu. It had mustard seeds, curry leaf, green chiles, and lemon juice. I liked the dish, but I thought it was just okay. I would have rather had more bowls of palak chaat. My brother seemed to really enjoy this though. It was a little too spicy for me.

This sort of looks like green throw up set in small clams. Well it was really good tasting vomit. Hahaha. No I didn’t actually eat vomit. These were clams caldine. SO GOOD. There was coconut, green chiles, and cilantro. I think the coconut calmed down the spice from the green chiles because I didn’t get any kick from these. Instead it was more of a sweet tasting broth and sauce in the clams. They were amazing. We threw these back so quickly. When the bowl was empty, we all were pretty sad. I would definitely order these again.

You need a good portion of naan bread at any meal that comes with a variety of stews, sauces, and broths. We used the naan to dip into the clam sauce, the curry, and the masala. It was such a good vehicle to get all that delicious food in my mouth.

This was the chicken tikka masala. Oh how the naan tasted so good dipped into the sauce. This was a pretty great dish. It was packed with a ton of flavors from the Indian spices and the herbs. The chicken was cooked perfectly. It was tender and not overcooked. I felt like I was slowly disappearing into an Indian food coma.

Oh shrimp curry, how sweet you are to me. It actually was really sweet, but in a good way. It was the Shrimp Kerala Curry. It had coconut milk, cumin, and black pepper. This was definitely my choice over the chicken dish because of the thick creamy texture from the coconut milk. I loved the sweetness that the dish had and it went perfectly with shrimp. Of course I dipped my naan into this.

My oh My. I don’t remember the name of this dish, but it was amazing. It was pork chops with a mint leaf sauce to rub on top of it. The lamb was so tender and just fell off the bone. I actually picked my bone up and started eating off it in the restaurant. I’m gonna get all the meat possible. The waiter loved this dish so much that he told us on his days off he comes to Rasika to enjoy a malt and these lamb chops. We all loved the lambchops so much. Get these along with the palak chaat and you won’t regret it.

Now comes for the time when my brother decided to order four desserts. I really only wanted one or two to share, but no he thought that it would be a good idea to get four desserts. He pretty much ate most of all of them, which I was pretty impressed with.

These were apple doughnuts, which I really enjoyed. They were thick instead of airy and light. It was a good thing though, which you normally wouldn’t want or expect with your doughnut. The plate was covered in pistachio crumbs and a vanilla ice cream. It was definitely a good choice for dessert. Oh if we only stopped at this one.

This was the dessert that I had wanted to get. It was Shahi Tukra, which may be the best dessert. It was a bread pudding type of dessert. It came along with apricots, figs, mangoes, and cherries. I was in heaven. It even came along with some edible foil on the top. If you only get one dessert, which is probably the smartest idea, I would definitely get this one.

This was Gulab Jamun. Another interesting Indian dessert. I was really excited to try this once I googled on my phone what it was. It was a sort of dumpling like dessert. It was served on top of a tropical fruit curd and with a scoop of nutella ice cream. I would definitely like to try this dish at another Indian place because I feel like it was really good, but I was so full and only had one or two bites, so I didn’t get to really taste the full potential of this dessert.

I thought this was disgusting. My brother and dad enjoyed this a lot, so at least someone got some pleasurable tastes from it. The reason I didn’t like it was all the different textures and flavors mixed in one cake. This was the baked kulfi. It had a rose cream on top of orange saffron cake and topped with baked marshmallows. That is too many different things in one for me to enjoy. I did like the fruit on the side though.

Overall I definitely give this restaurant a five star. Our waiter was amazing, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was so cute and whimsical. It was the perfect way to start out our food adventures in dc.

French Pastries Make Anything Better

Hey ya’ll! It is Monday. For the first time, I’m actually pretty excited that it is Monday. It is the last day of class for me and the best part is we are having speakers in some of my classes because they assumed that most people would go out of town, so class is optional (well except for my applied physiology class, but I have to turn in my review paper, so weeeee). I have a delicious treat for ya’ll this Monday. FRENCH PASTRIES. Seriously I think that French pastries make anything better. One of the best places in the city is Mille Feuille, which is located over near NYU. Man if only Columbia was over there. I would be probably 5000 lbs (haha jk because that would kill me). Anyways there is nothing like a delicious pastry and some hot chocolate on a cold day.

It is a really small shop, but it is packed with delicious treats. I was so cold, but the inside of the bakery was so warm that I think I was almost sweating. I made Carrianne sit outside with me, so I didn’t die to death inside while I nommed on my treats. It is a really cute shop though. The interior is decorated nicely, there is some stools to sit on, and it smells amazing. One of the coolest things about this little bakery is that they offer cooking classes for french macarons and croissants. Let me tell you, this is definitely the place you want to learn how to make either from (they have amazing macarons!).

Ummm look at these containers of french pastries. I think I died and went to heaven. I have actually been here before on a trip with my dad and little brother to New York. That is how I knew about this place beforehand since pastries isn’t the top thing I’m creeping on yelp for. It was really hard to choose what I wanted to get because I was torn between so many things. Look at those cronuts, they look so good. If we go back, I’m definitely going to be getting one of those because they had chocolate, raspberry, and almond. I would have gotten the chocolate or raspberry, but anyways on to what I ended up eating.

Look at this beautiful piece of croissant. It is pink, my favorite color. I think that is probably one of the main reasons that I gravitated towards this treat. The pink on the outside was beautiful. It was a raspberry flavored sugar that was sprinkled all over the top of the croissant. It was beautiful, but it was definitely a mess. When I was done eating this, I had pink stains all over my mouth. It was a pretty cute look for me.

Look at the flakiness of the croissant. When you bite into it, the crust just falls apart in your mouth. It was so buttery and delicious. It was definitely one of the best croissants I’ve had in a long time. Although nothing will ever compare to the chocolate croissants I have had in Europe (the funny thing is, the best chocolate croissant I had was in Germany). The sugar had soaked in a little bit in the pastry, so there was also a nice hint of raspberry in every bite.

Look at the inside of this croissant. It was an almond raspberry croissant, so the inside was filled with raspberry jam and almond paste. OMG. HEAVEN. When the two were mixed together, it was a sweet bite. The raspberry jam was perfect. It was made from fresh raspberries, so it didn’t have that artificial taste to it. I really hate when pastries just use pre-made fillings because having everything made from scratch makes it so much better. The almond paste was not too overwhelming, which was good because that helped it go along with the raspberry jam. I gobbled this thing up. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that goes here. Just be prepared to get messy.

This place has some of the best macarons of my life. These little things are packed with so much flavor, which is what makes a good macaron. I hate when they are cooked perfectly, but do not taste what the actual flavor is. These were coconut and pistachio. The pistachio is definitely a favorite. It tastes like freshly roasted pistachio nuts. If you closed your eyes, you would think that you are actually eating pistachios. The coconut was the same way. It tasted like fresh coconut bursting inside your mouth. Other macarons that I have had from this shop include salted caramel, passionfruit, lemon, chocolate, and raspberry. Every single one of those is delicious. The salted caramel and passionfruit are definitely at the top of the list though. This place even made Carrianne enjoy macarons, so you know that Mille Feuille is legit. Noms.

WIAW: Living in the City

Hey ya’ll! It is that time again: What I Ate Wednesday. We can give a big thanks to Jenn for hosting this lovely foodie day of the week. I am glad that it is Wednesday. I need a break from school. Sometimes it can get so exhausting having 6 hours of straight class on two days of the week. I can’t wait for next semester when I will only have one class a day. I need that even though that means I will lose my four day weekends, but don’t worry because I will still have three day weekends haha. Oh the good life of grad school. Now lets get to the food. I’ve been enjoying some interesting things while I’ve been living in NYC.

Who remembers that one time that I went to rave brunch and was pretty plastered by 3 pm? Oh yes I don’t really remember. Just kidding, I wasn’t that drunk, but I was pretty tipsy. Anyways I never showed ya’ll what I ordered because while most people go to drink there is also food served there. I had crab cake eggs benedict. They were actually pretty good. The english muffin was toasted perfectly and the eggs were poached well. The crab cake was just mediocre, but you can’t go wrong with putting crab cakes on top eggs benedict. It came with this awesome hash mix. I wish there had been more of that. It was awesome to dip in ketchup.

This may be the greatest thing that exists on planet Earth. Welcome to Bibimbap. One night when we were out with our guy friends, Carrianne and I really just wanted some greasy Chinese food. However it was 2 am on a Saturday and we were over by Grand Central, so finding greasy Chinese open at that hour wasn’t the easiest. However we ended up in the wonderful Koreatown. We had a miss adventure where we thought we were going for Korean BBQ, but we ended up in a Korean Karaoke bar. We left and decided to just go into the next restaurant. There I discovered the greatness of Bibimbap. This is a fried rice kind of dish where the rice cooks against the hot pot and gets super crunchy. Mine is topped with bulgogi, a fried egg, carrots, and other delicious vegetables. There is an awesome spicy Korean sauce to go on top of it too. I drenched mine in it. I can’t wait to have more bibimbap in my life.

I forgot to show these weeks ago when my roommates got them for me, but they spoiled me with Crumb’s cupcakes. I have the birthday cake one, carrot cake, coconut, and pumpkin. The birthday cake ended up being my favorite with the pumpkin following close behind it in second. The birthday cake one had the best icing. It was a simple buttercream with sprinkles. The thing I liked about the pumpkin and birthday cake was that they were stuffed with icing too. That is one reason why I love Crumb’s. They stuff their cakes. The cake was a funfetti cake too, which is probably why it was birthday themed. Overall these were great and the best part was I lost weight haha.

This picture is a little blurry, but it was super dark inside the restaurant. This past Saturday after Carrianne and I were running errands around Soho, we decided to stop somewhere and get a little snack. I ended up getting wine glazed pork belly, which was to die for. It was this cute little Korean restaurant called Kori. I will definitely be going back because the food was so good. They had bibimbap too (with pork belly), so you know I will be going just for that.

Well it was Saturday and while we were at the Korean restaurant we decided that we needed to go to a happy hour to get some drinks. Unfortunately this wasn’t a very easy thing to do since it was about 6:30 and we obviously weren’t going to make it. We finally found this place, but we missed the happy hour. Oh well we were still getting drinks. Mine had passionfruit vodka, lemonade, and cherry juice in it. Oh man. It was delicious. I could have thrown a few of these back. My second drink was just the wine of the night, but afterwards I was feeling good.

The funny thing about the happy hour place we ended up at was that they served dim sum all day. Well of course I was going to get some more food since all I had were those few slices of pork belly. I ended up getting pork soup dumplings. They were pretty good. The dumpling wrapper was super sticky, but overall it was good. The broth inside was perfect. Probably one of the better broths I’ve had in regards to soup dumplings.

It was dim sum, so I obviously was going to get my staple dish. BBQ pork buns. They were delicious. I don’t think you can really mess those up unless you are drunk while cooking, but still. All you do is steam. I am glad that I got to have a little dim sum on Saturday night because I really can’t live without dim sum. It is definitely one of the greatest meals of the day. I still need to venture out to Flushing to go get my real dim sum on.

OMG DROOOOOLING. Carrianne decided to make pumpkin scones on Sunday night and I was like yes, yes, and yes. They were so delicious. At first when she was making them I was getting a little skeptical because the dough looked super sketchy. However they turned out perfect. The icing on top was amazing too. It was a cinnamon and sweet frosting that soaked into the scone, which made it taste even better. This was a perfect way to end Sunday night.

I’ll leave ya’ll with a cute little picture of some red pandas that I saw at Central Park Zoo on Friday. They were the cutest things ever. I really wanted to steal one and take it home as a pet. I would have loved it and cuddled it sooooooo much.

Concrete Jungle and Snowcones

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I haven’t been around lately, but I have been on a whirlwind of events. I ended up deciding to go to graduate school at Columbia University in THE New York City. Best decision of my life. I have recently moved up here (recently being this past weekend, I drove all the way from Texas – woooo). I’m now living with my best friend from BU and another girl that went to BU. We all three go to Columbia, but I’m the only one that studies nutrition. I love my program! It is so amazing and I will definitely go on and on and on about it, but right now I’m going to share my first NYC adventure with ya’ll!

My roommate, Carrianne, and I ended up going to Greenwich Village to go on a hunt for something we needed for the apartment. However we ended up at this really cute pet store that had a ton of puppies on sale. Of course we had to go in and look at all of them just for fun. We definitely will never be getting a dog up here, but it doesn’t hurt to look at them. This cock-a-poo was so cute. I was tapping the glass with my finger and she was chasing it around. You could tell she did not want to be in the container. I wish we could have taken her out for a walk. I have a weak spot for adorable little puppies. After we had our fun, we went on the real adventure: to get a snowcone (ya’ll shouldn’t even be surprised at this point).

Ya’ll know how I love snowcones, especially New Orleans style. This place was so cute. It was called Imperial Woodpecker Snow-balls. It was tucked away in a street filled with restaurants. It was sort of like a food stand just out on the street. The guy was sitting there with the ice machine in front of him and all the bottles of flavors. This was the huge menu of flavors! It was so hard to pick what I wanted. I am definitely going to have to venture back to Greenwich just to have one of these snowcones before the September 15th close date.

I eventually decided to go for a booze theme and get flavors that were named after drinks. I chose margarita and mojito. I loved that the snowcone came in a takeout container. It was massive and definitely worth the 5$ price. It was sweet and tangy. The flavors matched each other perfectly as did the color. It was just a visually appealing snowcone with phenomenal flavors. I was in heaven as we walked around Greenwich looking at shop windows. I wish it was a never ending snowcone.

Just look at the majestic power of this container of shaved ice! It is seriously delicious. There are not enough words to describe the flavor sensation I experienced as I bite into this. The flavors were less fake and syrupy. It tasted as if they had made the syrups themselves instead of ordered them from a standard shaved ice company. They actually even had all natural flavors such as jalapeno watermelon and Meyer-Lemon Basil. Ummm yes. Who doesn’t want exotic flavors like that on a cup of ice?

Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls is the place to go! If you are in NYC currently, make it down to Greenwich village by Sept 15th to enjoy this tasty treat. The sad thing is that the manager is moving out of NYC, so this will be the last summer with Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls. I know, right? I discover something delicious in the city, and it is already leaving me! Oh well, I am going to make one more trek out there in order to try another flavor. Carrianne ended up getting the King Cake flavor and said that it was quite delicious!

Later that night, we were originally going to go out, so we went to this tapas bar, Marcha, in our neighborhood before going out. We ended up getting a couple of cocktails and tapas. Turns out that we didn’t make it out, but we didn’t really care because this place was amazing. The music was great, the cocktails were even better, and the food was so good. I ordered a colada type of drink that had hints of pineapple, coconut, and mango in it. It was like drinking pure fruit with alcohol hidden throughout it. Carrianne got a strawberry drink with champagne and some other alcohol in it. It was delicious, of course.

We got an order of patatas bravas. I know this doesn’t look like all the pictures of my patatas bravas from Spain, but this dish was equally delicious. It had a spicy aioli drizzled across perfectly seasoned and cooked sliced potatoes. We inhaled these. The sauce was so creamy and rich. The spiciness was not overpowering either, which was amazing. We also ended up order croquetas, specifically ones with goat cheese, tomatoes, and a red wine dipping sauce. Holy heck! These things were amazing. I wish I would have taken a picture, but at this point we were on our second cocktails and feeling good. I’m so glad that this place is one block from my apartment. We decided last night that this will definitely be one of our neighborhood joints.

I’m so glad to be living in the wonderful city that is New York. Ya’ll we be joining me on my foodie adventures to test out restaurants and cook in my apartment. I am going to be making a ton of different recipes, recreating dishes that I try, doing epic restaurant reviews, and of course sharing nutrition tidbits from my classes and life.

The Greatest Meal of My Life

Hey ya’ll! It is my favorite day of the week: What I Ate Wednesday! I am so happy to be back in the country to participate in this. Luckily for ya’ll, I’ve been holding off to post for this special day, so that I could share the best meal I had on my trip with ya’ll and the rest of the foodie community! Thanks so much to Jenn for hosting this weekly event! Girl, you are a genius. Anyways now time for my meal. This was when we got to Sevilla. The day after we went to Toledo and went back to Madrid, we woke up the next morning super EARLY and hopped on a train to Cordoba where we would only spend a few hours. Thank god before we left I ate a Luna bar to tide me over.

Our first stop on the itinerary in Cordoba was to go to La Mezquita, which is a sort of catheral and mosque. It was amazing. I am a huge art history buff, I even took a course in my undergraduate studies. Near the end of the course we studied this famous architecture because it has a huge Moorish influence. The arches are probably one of the most notable features of this place since they go on and on forever. The columns themselves are also gorgeous. You can learn a lot about the time period of a building by looking at the crown of the column, which has the decoration part on top of the pillar. All of the carvings in the wall were very intricate too. It is amazing that such beauty like this can be created years and years ago when there was not that much technology and tools.

More arches and columns. Don’t worry I won’t torture ya’ll so much. I have about a million pictures of this one place. It was so beautiful that I just kept snapping away at everything. My eyes were a bit overwhelmed by everything, so I wanted to take enough pictures to be able to remember it later. There was a small amount of stained glass in the building, which was seriously breathtaking. I am a huge fan of stained glass (Jewish probz – or maybe art lover problems). I really just love art and architecture in general. If I could do something else in life (I wouldn’t because I love nutrition and health too much), but if I did it would have to do with art and architecture. I love it.

After La Mezquita, we headed off into these really small alley ways to find a synagogue. However the synagogue was closed for renovation, but luckily the Sephardic museum was open! I’m an Ashkenazi Jew, which means that I come from Eastern Europe. Sephardic Jews come from Spain, Morocco, etc etc. The museum was really cute though. It was three stories with each room being a different part of Jewish history in Spain. They had tons of old Spanish Jewish artifacts like a seder plate that was painted in the brightest colors. I liked that the Sephardic Jews were into very bright and vibrant things. It makes everything so much more beautiful. After this museum, our train was in an hour, so we didn’t have time to sit down and eat anything. We went back to the station and got on our train to Sevilla. Once in Sevilla we were starving, so we went to look for something that was open to eat. However it was siesta around this time, so we were getting nervous that nothing was open. Luckily we ended up at La Azotea, which had the best meal of our entire trip.

This may have been my favorite tapas plate of the entire meal. It was wontons with goat cheese and shrimp inside topped with a spicy aioli sauce and scallions. Ummmm yes. It was like an asian fusion with spanish food. The wontons were really hot, but the cheese just melted into your mouth as you bit into it. The shrimp was chopped very finely, so that the texture was not a bothersome at all. It was the perfect dish. I could have eaten about two or three plates of these and called it a meal.

This was a fish plate. It had a small filet of fish on top of a bed of greens, tomatoes, and this garlic sauce. It was also topped with parmesan flakes. This was a medio portion, which meant that it was half of what the ration is. It was cooked perfectly. The fish was extremely flaky and fresh. The tomatoes were so good too. When you mixed everything up with the sauce, it was the perfect bite. There were some other good looking fish plates that went by us as we sat waiting for our food. We wanted to eat everything.

This looks extremely weird, and a little bit like sushi. However it is just some brown rice and meat stuffed into a seaweed wrap and topped with either an egg or caramelized onions. When I first saw this dish on the table, I was a bit worried. It looks a little sketchy, however it is an explosion of deliciousness when you shove it in your mouth. You expect it to be a bit bitter, but instead it is extremely sweet in a savory sort of way. I would have definitely ordered this again.

Croquettes! We obviously couldn’t have gone one meal without eating at least one of our favorite traditional Spanish foods. These were AMAZING. It was like a sweet duck sauce underneath the croquettes, which were just simply filled with ham and cheese. They were fried super crispy too, which gave the outside a nice crunch as you got into the soft inside. These were definitely one of the best croquettes I had on the trip.

I believe that if you are having the best meal of your life, you definitely need to order dessert. Since this restaurant was so amazing, it was obvious that all of the desserts were going to be equally amazing. It was really hard to pick, but in the end we ended up choosing a chocolate orange souffle. It was mind blowing. When we broke it open, chocolate ganache spilled out of the cake. We ate it up in about five minutes. They must have thought we were American pigs, but oh well. It was good. Definitely the best meal of the trip. I wish we could have gone back at least one more time to try other things on the menu since there were so many tempting options.

Instead of having dinner like a normal person, we decided to head over and eat some helado (ice cream) for dinner. Such a good option in my opinion. We went to Rayas, which is a very popular heladeria in Sevilla. It was definitely worth the trek (later on we found out that there was one literally a foot from our hotel lol). My brother ended up getting strawberry cheesecake and dulce de leche. The strawberry cheesecake was definitely my favorite of the two. It was so creamy and rich.

I decided to go pretty simple and just get coconut. It was delicious. There were small flakes of coconut within the ice cream. I love fruit flavors of ice cream. I wish we would have gone back to get more because I would have gotten lemon or mango. You can’t go wrong with something simple. If I had my way, I probably would have just snuck behind the counter and sampled every single flavor. Yeah, I like ice cream. Foreign icecream is just so much better in comparison to American. I could live off gelato in Italy, but that is a whole different story. Back to Spain!

After we got our ice cream, we ate it and walked around Sevilla. We ended up at this awesome castle/church thing. I’m not really sure what it was, but it was gigantic. It looks cool at night. We walked through the Juderia (Jewish neighborhood) and even ended up attending some neighborhood party. Actually we think it was some political rally, but it felt like a neighborhood party to me. It was super awkward in my opinion and I wanted to leave. Eventually we ended up back at the hotel and went to rest for the next day ahead of us.

I hope everyone had a good WIAW! We are halfway through the week. I’m not sure why I count down the week anymore since I pretty much do nothing besides coach volleyball. It is just a habit I guess or I’m just super excited for the Maccabi games and graduate school. Who knows!

One Trailer At A Time

Hey ya’ll! It is Thursday and I couldn’t be happier. Tomorrow I am flying off to Miami to go celebrate the wonderful thing known as Ultra Music Festival. In case ya’ll don’t know what it is, the festival is the largest dance/electronic music festival in the world. I can’t wait. Anyways for today’s post I thought I would write about something I love: food trailers (hopefully you aren’t sick of my posts on this topic). I can’t help it that Austin has a million trailers. My best friend from college was in town and we decided to go on a trailer adventure in order to get a good taste of Austin.

crepe-mille-1Back to an old favorite. South Congress is such a good area that has tons of food trailers, shopping, and weird little Austin things. I went here on my birthday weekend, had an amazing crepe in the rain, and decided that I must go back in order to try another one. I was excited because I started eating meat again, so I was going to get to try one of the many savory crepes that were available.

photo(3)Oh look at that beauty. We had the pork floss crepe. I think this one was even better than the last time I was there if that is even possible. It had authentic Chinese shredded pork and it was topped with thai chili sauce. An Asian crepe? Definitely the best way to go. The weather was perfect and so was the food. The pork was light like cotton candy and the sauce wasn’t too spicy. It also didn’t soak the crepe into a soggy mess, which I definitely appreciate. Yelp needs to get their stuff together because Crepe Mille definitely deserves at least 4 stars, not 3 and 1/2.

photo(4)Ya’ll know I have a huge weakness for snowballs. When we were walking up South Congress, I spotted this thing from a far away distance. Yes, my eyes are special and they locate things that I love in life. This trailer is new in Austin, so I thought I would test out the snowball quality of yet another stand.

photo(8)I decided to order the Cinderella. It was a mix of blue coconut and toasted coconut. As you saw in my last post, I love coconut. As soon as I saw on the menu that there was double the coconut then I knew I was going to get it. It was delicious. The only downside was that there was more blue coconut than the toasted coconut, so it sort of got overpowered. The other problem was that it became liquid very quickly, but I still thought it was tart and had a good flavor.

photo(5)While I munched on my snowcone, we waited for this interesting looking trailer to open up. They had an entire patio in front of their trailer! That was crazy cool. Since there was a cheese sign in front of the patio, we thought that the trailer probably sold something having to do with cheese or grilled cheeses. Obviously that meant we were going to check it out since cheese is one of our favorite food groups.

photo(6)Cheesey goodness. We decided to order the via 206. The sandwich had cheddar, gruyere, balsamic apricot fig jam, and it was on beer bread. I wish the sandwich was bigger. That was my only complaint. It was perfectly grilled, the cheese was melty and goey, and the fig jam provided a sweet taste to match the cheese flavors. I wish I lived down the street, so I could get myself a grilled cheese everyday.

capital-city-bakeryOf course I had to take my best friend to my best food truck: Capital City. Oh how I love these baked goods. Seriously best vegan treats in all of Austin. Maybe even the best desserts in Austin, but I love all desserts so that would be hard.

photoCapital city makes the cutest iced sugar cookies on the planet. When I saw this little cat in the bakery window, I just had to get it. It was delicious too. The cookie was soft and chewy. The icing was not too sweet and there wasn’t an excessive amount on top. I am definitely a fan of the cookies now (NOTHING is bad at this trailer, I swear).

photo(1)There were so many wonderful cupcakes in the window. However out of the corner of my eye, I saw her toasting some marshmallows in the back. Then I looked to the other side and saw a line of cupcakes waiting to be topped with the marshmallows. Hello, s’mores cupcakes. Of course I was going straight for that one. The cupcake was moist chocolatey goodness while the icing was a subtle sweet flavor. Not to mention the extra chocolate on top with the marshmallow. This cupcake was amazing. My friend ended up getting the blackberry lemon cupcake, which was also as delicious.

2The final stop was of course one of the greatest trailers in Austin: Gordough’s. My friend had heard a lot about this wonderful trailer not only from me, but from her family friend who lives in Houston. He told her that Gordough’s is a must! I wasn’t going to complain about going there because it is so good.

photo(7)This looks sort of like a pile of mush. It was definitely a super delicious pile of mush. We got the Sarah’s joy donut, which was chocolate and coconut. Pretty much like an mounds bar, but on a donut. The donut was also stuffed with coconut cream. Ummm YES. We ended up taking it to go because we were full at the time. We wanted to snack on it later though, so I guess that is why it looks like a pile of mush.

The Cupcakes Of Boston

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Mine was pretty awesome since I got to spend it with friends, family, and watching the UT volleyball tournament. We obviously dominated since we are no 2 in the nation. Last nights match was probably the most intense since it was against the no 19 team. We pulled through though. For today’s Boston post, I thought I would do a recap on the cupcakes of Boston.

First up on the list is Georgetown cupcakes, which is located on Newbury street. They had a ton of flavors, but I decided on a gluten free lava fudge cupcake. I have to say that this cupcake was actually pretty good for being gluten free. It wasn’t the best cupcake I have ever had, but the price was good (2.75) and there was a fudgey surprise in the middle. One of my complaints is the lack of creativity in flavors. They had about 5 variations of chocolate and 5 variations of vanilla. I was confused why someone needs that many types of plain flavors. Georgetown would definitely be higher on my list if they had more creative flavors.

The second place we went to for cupcakes was Sweet. I ordered the Pina Colada flavor, which was one of the summer specials. It was a sweet vanilla bean cake with a shot of pineapple preserves and topped with coconut infused buttercream. Oh my god. How I love Sweet’s buttercream. It is probably one of the most amazing icings I’ve ever had in my life. I love that they have tons of seasonal flavors each month too. The cupcake is so moist, and when you hit the pineapple preserves its a sweet little surprise.

Carrianne decided to get a summer flavor too. She ordered the Lemon Blueberry flavor, which was new even for the summer flavors. It was a lemon juice infused cake with blueberries baked in it, and it was topped with a vanilla bean buttercream that was infused with blueberry puree. She was in heaven, and so was I because she let me have a bite. These cupcakes are amazing and you will never be let down by sweet. If you are ever in Boston, you must go here. There are tons of locations all over the city!

The third cupcake stop was Cakeology. This shop was made famous from Cupcake Wars on the TLC channel. I was super stoked that they had finally opened a store front, and that I would be able to sample the cupcakes from TV. Oh how I was disappointed. I ordered mini versions of German chocolate, mint chocolate, and Boston Cream Pie. The Boston cream pie lacked the cream flavor, the mint was overpowering, and the German chocolate was lacking that coconut flavor and it was just pure chocolate. The only thing I really liked was that all the flavors came in mini versions, so you didn’t have to be a pig.

Then I experienced the holy grail of cupcakes. Okay, I’m lying because I’ve actually been to Crumbs before, but their cupcakes are so superior that it doesn’t matter. These are hands down the best cupcakes that I have ever had in m entire life. The first one we split was Monkey Business. It was a moist banana cake with a nutella core and topped with a nutella buttercream rolled in nuts and drizzled with caramel. OH MY. This cupcake was mind blowing. The cupcake was so moist and the buttercream was to die for. If it wasn’t in the financial district, I would have gone here every day.

The second cupcake that we split was the chocolate sundae cupcake. Oh man was this one good too. It was a chocolate cake filled with vanilla buttercream frosting topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting drizzled with chocolate ganache, sprinkles, chopped peanuts, and a cherry. This cupcake was splendid. It was a fancy version of a chocolate cupcake with much better flavors than just a plain old one. I loved the combination of the cream cheese on top with the vanilla buttercream in the middle. It was splendid. You must go to Crumbs cupcakes if you can. You will not regret it.

The final stop on the cupcake adventure was Party Favors. Since going to college in Boston, I’ve been wanting to try this place forever. It had rave reviews on Yelp, plus the BU online blog did a review on party favors saying that it was the greatest cupcake in Boston. I went in, ordered the Boston Cream Pie cupcake, and went on my merry way. While the cream inside the cupcake was PERFECT and the chocolate ganache was extremely rich, I wasn’t as thrilled as the people who did reviews. I thought it was good, but in my mind Crumbs is far superior to all.
