WIAW: While Abroad

Hey ya’ll! It is that awesome time of the week again, What I Ate Wednesday, thanks to the lovely Jenn. Unfortunately I’m going to have to recap some of the past today because I don’t have time to write an elaborate post about what I have been eating lately. Plus I’ve been slacking on the picture taking front. I have been too busy studying for my advanced nutrition midterm and working on my lab skills, such as blood pressure. I’ll probably kick the butt of all of it, but I would rather be overprepared for everything. So I’m going to recap the rest of my Spain trip in this awesome post because I realized that I forgot to share the rest of the trip with ya’ll. Get ready for some delicious, appetizing Spanish food porn coming your way.

When we were in Barcelona, we went to heaven. Also known as La Boqueria. It is this huge outdoor market. It was amazing. There was so much to see inside. There were also little restaurants spread throughout the place. I pretty much wanted to gobble up everything that was in sight. It was really hard to just choose a few things to snack on because we really wanted to sit down and get some tapas too.

Isn’t this beautiful? I thought so. I really just wanted to rob the entire candy stand. I’m not gonna lie, but I totally kept taking free samples of everything when the Spanish woman working the shop wasn’t looking. Sometimes it is hard to tell if a candy is good or not, so I thought why not test taste. Since we were getting tapas in a little bit, my brother and I decided to each get a huge bag of candy to take home with us on our long journey. Well he ended up eating his all before we even left Spain, but I got to enjoy mine when I was back in America and on my long journey. This candy was the bomb. I really miss it actually. It was pretty cheap too.

Since it was a pretty hot day, we ended up getting smoothie/juices. It was a mix between a smoothie and a juice. It was really delicious. I ended up getting the pineapple coconut one. You could taste the fresh pineapple chunks in it mixed with the creaminess of the coconut. My brother got a watermelon one. It was really good too. His was more juice like while mine had the consistency of a smoothie. These were all over the market too. Pretty cheap. At some places, you could get a small one for one euro. I like cheap things.

After walking around the market a bit, we decided to sit down and get some tapas. We ended up getting calamari of course. This was actually some pretty good calamari. It was salty, but when sprinkled with the lemon juice it became a little more acidic. It was really good. I wish there would have been more to enjoy because you can’t go wrong with ordering anything that is fried. Especially squid. It is definitely always a win win (lies though because I was poisoned by horrible food at this place in Sevilla – trying not to think about it).

Of course we were getting patatas bravas too. These were very hasbrown like, which was delicious. It is always a safe choice to go with patatas bravas. As long as they aren’t just drenched in sauce then you are good to go. I think we ordered a few other things, but apparently I blacked out at this point in the meal and stopped taking pictures. I think we were in a rush that day because we were taking the train back to Madrid. This feels like forever ago too, which is sad because it was only a few months ago. I definitely miss this trip. It was amazing.

I know when I was recapping my Spain trip that I wrote about the greatest meal of my life, but I lied. This meal was definitely tied with it. We went on a day trip to Malaga, which was so beautiful. It was a nice coastal town where we could look out at the ocean. I wish we would have gone to the beach while we were there, but it was a long drive from where we were staying, so we couldn’t stay that long. Anyways this restaurant we went to while we were there was AMAZING. This is caramelized apples with foie gras. Ummm YES. It tasted as good as it looks. The crispy sweetness of the apples went well with the foie gras. My life belief is that you should always treat yourself to foie gras. You won’t regret it.

These were definitely some of the best croquetas I had on my trip. Actually the dipping sauce was amazing. It was like a spicy mayonaisse. That is definitely want you want to be dipping fried cheese balls in. I think that these were just your basic jamon (ham) croquetas. They may have been simple, but definitely packed a ton of flavor. I think that all croquetas should come with a delicious sauce like this.

These were some really interesting things. At first I thought I was at an Asian restaurant, but then I remembered that I was in Spain. I thought these were eggrolls, but I’m still not really sure what they are. Anyways they were the best things EVER. They had duck in them, which was tender and delicious. The sauce that went with it was sweet and tangy, which went nice with the crunch of the fried wrapper. I was sad that I couldn’t remember the name of these because I am always looking for them at tapas restaurants in the city.

This was a tapas from the gods in heaven. It was toasted bread with mushrooms, shrimp, and a creamy ranch sauce. It was so good. I was sad that we had only gotten one order because we each only got to enjoy one piece of it. The shrimp was cooked and seasoned perfectly while the mushrooms had been sauteed in butter and oil providing a nice texture along with the crunch of the bread. The sauce was amazing. All creamy, fattening sauces are good anyways, so this was just like mmmmmmmmmmm.

Well we couldn’t go anywhere without having an order of patatas bravas. Since this was one of the best meals of my life, these were obviously going to be one of the best patatas bravas on the trip. I loved how they used not only the spicy traditional sauce, but also drizzled some mayonaisse based sauce on top too. When the sauces blended together, it gave a creamy spicy combination to go along with the crunchiness of the fried potatoes. Man, how I miss these things. I seriously dream about these little bites of heaven all the time because it is so hard to find traditional and delicious patatas.

Since we are totally fatties and it was our vacation, so we were treating ourselves, we had to get a dessert. It took a bit to pick because I wanted those eggroll things, but in dessert form. However they had ran out of that, so we settled for this cinnamon apple dessert. It was definitely a winning choice. It was amazing. It had caramel, cooked apples, cinnamon, vanilla icecream, and walnuts. I died. Literally. It was perfection. It was literally gone in about less than a minute. My brother and I of course had our typical spoon fight over the last few bites.

Breakfast of champions right here. I’m not even sure what any of this is, but my dad stopped at a pastry shop and just picked a bunch of things for my brother to have. I got the doughnut looking thing. It was not your typical doughnut. It sort of reminded me of this cronut craze that is going on. It was more pastry like on the inside and then topped with a sugar glaze.

Here was my breakfast of champions. I think this was called a bombello or bombom or something along the lines with the letters bom in it. It was like eating cake for breakfast. Actually it literally was. The inside was a sweet buttercream. The pastry was a cream puff that had been dipped in rich dark chocolate. It was good. The other thing was just a basic little pastry roll stuffed with sweet cream. Everyone was grabbing to get a bite of my big pastry. It was that good. I was in a sugar coma though after breakfast. Not a bad way to start the day.

We stopped at this interesting little tapas place in Barcelona. You pretty much picked all the tapas you wanted from a bar and went back to your seat to enjoy them. You paid by the amount of toothpick and the size of the toothpick, so that was pretty interesting. It was a good place to go to get a little snack before we went on a long adventure for the day. Some of the stuff was really good while some of the other things were just all right. It was overall an experience.

I obviously have to share some more sweets, specifically helado. I love ice cream. In Spain, it was actually pretty delicious. This was more of a gelato style kind of ice cream place. I ended up getting white chocolate with raspberry and chocolate chunks in it. It was really good. I think the owner said that it was one of the most popular flavors. After I had a few bites, I knew why. The tartness of the raspberries went along well with the rich flavor of the chocolate. It was so good. A nice treat for a warm day (although the weather was never really that hot while we were there, which was nice).

I know I’m good when I have literally memorized every single thing and can repeat it without looking at any notes. I could practically teach the class.

WIAW Back to the Party

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I was gone for so long, but I decided to take a mini vacation from my responsibilities (lets be serious, blogging is my only one right now haha). I’m back again because I have so many wonderful posts of restaurant reviews, recipes, and other great surprises for ya’ll! Guess who’s blog is almost one year old? MINE! That is exciting. In the mean time I’m going to celebrate my favorite weekly party WIAW, which is hosted by Jenn. Seriously love it. It always puts me in a better mood to stare at beautiful pictures of food. Not that I’m in a bad mood because I killed my biochemical nutrition paper and the final. 4.0 for my final semester and Dean’s list yet again. Go Lindsay! Lets get it started in hurrrr (oh god I am not that lame)

Introducing one of my favorite combinations, cake batter oatmeal. You seriously can’t go wrong with anything that is cake batter flavored or themed. Plus the pile of sprinkles adds a happy cheer to this bowl of deliciousness. I had to top it with peanut butter for a creamy texture. It was definitely a good decision. Just looking at this bowl makes me happy. It is really hard for me to decide if I like oatmeal or pancakes more for breakfast, so I think I’m just going to say it is a tie. I have a ton of oatmeal recipes in my brain right now, so get ready in the next month for some epic, scrumptious recipes that will make you drool and run out to go buy oatmeal immediately. Score.

What is this? An apple? No. Um what? Yes, this is a pear. It is called a papple. Did I buy it partially because of the name? Yes, but also because I love pears and the fact that it looks like a freaking apple. My mom and I were at Central Market to get apples and some fresh fish when we ran across this interesting specimen. We decided to get one for each of us to try. The texture was very odd, but delicious. It was crisp like a pear, but had a crunch like an apple. The flavor was not overly sweet with a small amount of tartness to it.

I go weak for a good salad. This is my healthy version of a Chinese chicken salad. I left out the unhealthy fried crispy strings. It has avocado, mandarin oranges, sliced red onion, carrot sticks, grilled chicken, lettuce, and a nice sesame thai sauce that is slightly drizzled over the salad. Winner winner healthy chicken dinner. I love making popular salads a lot less calorie packed. I’m going to do an eat this, not that post in regards to my recipe redux of fatty salads that people consider healthy at many popular restaurant chains.

This sort of looks like a pile of mush, but a really delicious pile of junk. Don’t worry I didn’t eat this all in the same day. The base of this entire box of goodies is lettuce. It is topped with onions, mushrooms, carrots, edamame, curry chickpea salad, tofu in pesto, broiled cauliflower, sauteed mushrooms, a little piece of salmon, some grilled zucchini, and some black olives. This was one of the most filling meals I’ve ever had. My favorite thing in this box of whole foods salad bar goods was the curry chickpea salad. It was not over powering with the curry and it had a sweet flavor with the mango and edamame in it. Yum. I love the salad bar.

Every since my mom’s birthday, we have been on the look out for the black forest parfait at Whole Foods. However THEY HAVEN’T HAD IT. Seriously depressing. We decided to try this lemon berry parfait instead. However since we are total idiots, we didn’t realize that the lemony goodness was on the bottom of the cup, so we were eating it and being like WHERE is the lemon dang it. Once we discovered the lemon it was like ooooo that is good, but still not as great as the black forest one. That is just my favorite. You can’t go wrong with chocolate and cherries. Noms.

Barf in a bowl? It sort of looks like it, but instead it is my delicious creation with my left over spaghetti squash. It is the healthy version of mac n cheese. It is crazy good. I know it looks disgusting to look at, but trust me when you have a bite it it just cheesy goodness that melts in your mouth. I will definitely have to take more pictures and make this recipe again, so I can actually share it with you. It came to me on a whim when I got home from volleyball practice. I was in the mood for cheese (my favorite food group – you are obviously sick if you don’t like cheese), so I was like hmm mac n cheese, but let me make this healthy.

Healthy snacks by Lindsay. I am getting good at this. I am definitely going to add this to my snack post that is coming real soon. This was homemade cinnamon chips topped with chopped strawberries and a little sugar free chocolate syrup. Dessert nachos. This is the way to go. It was cinnamon sugar that is dusted on the tortilla. It makes for a subtle sweet flavor. I definitely can’t wait to make more of these with different toppings.

Heaven in little squares? You bet. I have one fatty awesome treat coming for you all in the next few weeks. These are petit fours filled with Bavarian cream and lemon filling. I know you are all now drooling. I have more pictures, but I’m definitely going to have to hold back on ya’ll for the meantime because you will be crying and yelling at me to give the recipe to you immediately. These things are fantastic. My mom and I made them for my volleyball team, and we are getting ready to make some more for a wedding shower. I think I should just quit at life and open a bakery. Food truck maybe? If life doesn’t work out then maybe that will be the plan.

I hope you all have a fantastic Wednesday. I’m currently working on some diet plans for a client I have. If this is a success, I’m totally going to use this person as my business card for my future nutrition practice once I get my license. Also I have tons of artwork I’m doing plus I’m working on tons of scientific papers for my professor. I’m out on the job hunt too, but it isn’t looking good since I’m going to Europe for two weeks. Oh well, those people are losing out because I’m awesome.

Barley Swine (Take 2)

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I’ve been gone for a long time. I’ve been a busy bee. Traveling around the US, applying to graduate schools, and of course the busy work of being a senior in the undergraduate nutrition program while working on a review paper. What have I been up to food-wise? A LOT! So I’m going to bombard ya’ll with a crazy amount of posts about restaurants, recipes, and places I’ve eaten at on my travels. The other night my dad, my younger brother, and I went to the Barley Swine in Austin. We love this place so much because of the exquisite small plates that are offered there.

DSC02741This is grilled broccoli, fermented chili, and crushed duck egg. The crushed duck egg was creamy and smooth with a hint of garlic that melted perfectly in the mouth. The broccoli was crispy and was a nice combination with the fermented chili that was scattered around the plate. This was definitely one of my favorite dishes because of the garlic chips in the dish added a nice hint of flavor the already perfect dish.

DSC02742This was the second appetizer dish. One of the good thing about all the appetizer plates is that they are all vegetable based. On this plate were hay roasted beets, mole, crispy rice, and goat cheese. It was delicious. I’m not a big beet eater, but this definitely has changed my mind. The beets were soft, which was great when you added in the crispy rice since it gave it a nice crunch. The variety of flavors in the dish were amazing. I definitely will go for more beet dishes after this.

DSC02743This thing looks like a pile of goop.However it is an amazing pile of goop. Underneath the garlic chips there were bay scallops, cauliflower, masa, raisins, and chipotle. The chipotle provided a sweet smokey flavor to the dish. It was amazing. The scallops were tiny, which was nice because I hate when there are only one to three large scallops. The cauliflower was creamed into the sauce, so it wasn’t overwhelming.

DSC02744Hello to one of the greatest dishes of the night. This was goat, walnut, kohlrabi, fenugreek, wild rice, and green garlic. The goat was cooked to be extremely tender, so when you bit into the meat it fell apart in your mouth. That is my kind of meat. The sauce that went along with it was so creamy, and added a sweetness to the tender cooked meat.

DSC02745I’m still not sure what to think about this dish. It is a soft poached egg, celery, dill, popcorn, and fermented goats milk. Yes, I did say popcorn? I am not sure the popcorn was so great on the plate, but when you had a bite of the egg with the goats milk it was extremely delicious. The foam was one of the interesting parts about the dish. I was sort of ambivalent about the dish.

DSC02746This dish was perfection. This was a smoked steel head trout, fennel, pine, and shiitake mushrooms. This was like a high end and creative version of lox. It was like a Jewish girl’s heaven. All I needed was a fancy bagel to go along with this dish and it would have been like Saturday Kiddush bruncheon after services. This was one of the specials they had on the board, so if you go within the week definitely get this dish.

DSC02748This looks a little creepy, but I promise it is good. It is lamb sausage, mint, sunchoke, and bacon broth. BACON BROTH?!? Yes, one of the greatest things that has ever existed on the planet. I wish you could order bacon broth everywhere you went because it is just that amazing. The lamb sausage had a wide variety of flavors with a bit of a kick. It was spicy, but the perfect amount so it didn’t overwhelm you.

DSC02749I could eat ten of these plates because it was just that awesome. It had bacon, brussel sprouts, hot sauce, hay butter, and hoe cakes. I love the hoe cakes at Barley Swine. They are delicious. The bacon was thick square pieces that went along nicely with the crunch of the roasted brussel sprouts. The hot sauce on the plate had a nice addition. It was more of a sweet hot sauce, so it wasn’t too overwhelming to the palate.

DSC02750What is this? It is pig three ways. It is crispy trotter, pig’s face, and loin. The rest of the goods on the plate are pinto beans and sauerkraut. The crispy trotter was stuffed with foie gras and some cheese. That may have been my favorite because you definitely can’t go wrong with anything that is fried. However the pig face is also extremely delicious. They cook the face of the pig and once the meat is extremely tender, the chef cuts out the softest pieces to serve on the plate. The loin was delicious, but the others were my favorite.

DSC02751This dish was the best of the night. The picture is a little dark because the restaurant started to change the mood for an upcoming party at 7:30. This was duck, foie gras, carrot, lavendar, farro, and hibiscus. The duck was crispy on the outside and extremely tender on the inside. It was the perfect cooked duck. The foie gras was heaven. It was so soft and melted in your mouth as you combined it with the farro and cooked carrots. I wish I could have eaten this dish over and over again.

DSC02752Time for dessert. Always one of my favorite parts of the meal. This was a meyer lemon tart, basil, quinoa granola, and rooibos tea sorbet. The lemon was sour and sweet at the same time providing for a delicious treat.

DSC02753Chocolate heaven. I have a huge weakness for chocolate, so as soon as this dessert came out I had my spoon ready to dig in. My family laughed because they discovered my biggest weakness (they kept getting annoyed because I would slap their hands, so that I could take a photo of each plate). This was a milk chocolate ganache topped with sweet potato marshmallows, whiskey, and orange. I was in heaven. There was also chocolate meringue chips that topped the dessert. It was amazing. I had died and gone to a chocolate bliss world.

If you are ever in Austin, please please go to this restaurant. You should order 3-4 small plates per person in your group. We ordered everything, but then again we like to eat a lot of food to sample everything a place has to offer.

Belated Birthday

Hey ya’ll! This week is sort of crazy for me. I’m taking the GRE on Thursday night, so I’ve been devoting my life to studying for it. I am praying that I do good, so I don’t have to take it again. That thing is freaking expensive. To be honest, I don’t really think you need to be skilled in geometry or have a high vocab to get your masters in nutrition and exercise physiology. Anyways this past weekend it was my mom’s birthday! I seriously love my mom to death, she is pretty awesome.

Funny story actually. So on Friday we went to this place called Hey Cupcake to get my cousin a few cupcakes for her birthday (yeah, all of my relatives are born at the same time – weird), and my mom decided to get one for herself for her birthday. The guy working there was like well how old are you and she was like guess how old my daughter is, so he looks at me and goes 16. REALLY DUDE? Like really? I’m 23, but sure 7 years off isn’t bad. He then proceeds to flirt with me and talk about how tall women are beautiful. Umm okay, you just thought I was 16 about 5 seconds ago.

DSCN0160For my mom’s actual birthday, we ended up going to the Whole Foods in downtown Austin to pick up lunch and about 5 million desserts. Okay, I exaggerated a bit. Only like 6 desserts because there was a surprise waiting for my mom at home. We first went to go get my mom a chocolate covered caramel apple at the chocolate bar in the Whole Foods, and that is where I saw some pretty cool stained glass chocolate. I love that chocolate is an art form. I also love the way it tastes. You are probably a deeply disturbed person if you don’t like chocolate.

DSCN0167For my lunch I had a salad from the hot and cold food bars. I piled it on with delicious goodness. It had spinach leaves and romaine lettuce, eggplant with miso glaze, roasted zucchini, grilled mushrooms, pesto roasted tofu, edamame, and some roasted tomatoes. Healthy and delicious. That is my style. My brother and mom split a sandwich called the Mopac. I know ya’ll are telling me to shut up about the food and just get to the desserts, so lets do this.

DSCN0171That is beautiful. I have a weakness for cherries. Oh and if you didn’t already know chocolate too. I love chocolate. This was a black forest cake in a cup. I love when Whole Foods smashes up a dessert and puts it in a cup to go. This dessert was probably my favorite of all the ones we picked out to have. It was so rich from the chocolate and it was moist. Thank god because I hate when cakes or brownies are like crispy instead of squishy.

DSCN0170That cloud of fluffy icing looks like a nice pillow that I just want to lay on and eat it up. Maybe not exactly, but I definitely want to gobble it up. This is the tres leches cake at Whole Foods. If you haven’t had it, you seriously need to get in your car and go pick one up immediately. This is probably the moistest cake I have ever had, and also the best tres leches cake I’ve probably had too. Whole Foods does a perfect job of incorporating the classic flavors of this traditional Mexican dessert.

DSCN0163The surprise that was awaiting my mother. A Banana Fosters birthday cake. Yes, I know. This actually exists in reality. Thank you Whole Foods for being the greatest place in the world. Okay I wouldn’t go that far, but I do love the Whole Foods. Really just the one in Austin because it is the headquarters and far superior to any other one in the world.

DSCN0169This cake was heaven. It had a thin layer of caramel for every icing layer within the cake. The bottom of the cake was surrounded in dehydrated bananas, I was a fan and no one else was. The icing was fluffy and delicious, while the cake was not dry and had so many flavors packed into it. It was sort of overwhelming, but in a good way.

DSCN0173I ended up having some fruit salad, so I could pretend that I didn’t eat all of that dessert. I’m not that much of a fatty. I only had one or two bites of every dessert that we actually got. I liked the fruit salad though. It was only filled berries and pineapple. I was glad because I’m not a fan of honeydew and I hate when people put it in fruit salad. Gross.

We obviously didn’t buy a huge thing of chocolate, but I love how they do all these cool artsy pieces in the display case at the chocolate bar in the Whole Foods. I do wonder if someone actually buys these things. I wouldn’t mind if a guy bought me that key in dark chocolate.

DSCN0162We know I love cupcakes. My weakness in life. Whole Foods does such a good job at making the cupcakes look crazy adorable, so people will buy them. This one was my favorite one that day. It was an icecream sunday on top of a plain vanilla cupcake. I’ve had their cupcakes before, so I didn’t want to get one. I love the icing, but the cake is just sort of a cake. Whole Foods is obviously somewhere you don’t go to get the cupcakes, but still most of their desserts are pretty mind blowing.

What I Ate Wednesday

Man, oh man. It is time for another What I ate Wednesday post thanks to the amazing Jenn over at Peas & Crayons. This has been a crazy week for me. I finally have started back in school. FINAL YEAR. Yes, this will be my second senior year. I’m just glad I still have more time to figure out things for my post-undergraduate life such as, finally deciding to get my masters in sports nutrition, where I’m going to apply for grad school and RD internship, and random goals for myself. Blah blah blah. Okay, I’ll get to the food pictures.

I am back to enjoying pancakes in the morning! Lately I’ve been trying to eat completely gluten free (Obviously someone didn’t get the memo while in Boston), so when I found out that Bisquick has made a gluten free pancake and waffle mix I grabbed it off the shelves to sample. It is actually pretty good. Being typical Lindsay, I have to spice it up by making creative pancakes, so I threw in some pumpkin, chocolate chips, and banana slices to complete the meal. Only 1/3 c of the powder makes about 5-6 pancakes, so it is pretty impressive and low calorie.

How that I’m back in school, I have to start planning my meals and packing my lunch ahead of time. On Tuesdays, I have class from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm. It is definitely going to be a long day on Tuesdays, but with packing a healthy filling lunch I know I will be able to get through it all.

For my Tuesday lunch this week, I had a tofu stir fry with broccoli, peppers, carrots, mushrooms, and water chestnuts. It was all served on top of brown rice. For a side I had a sliced granny smith apple. This meal definitely held me over until I finished Advanced Food Science and headed back to my apartment.

For snack I’ve been munching on these amazingly low calorie sugar free chocolate pumpkin muffins. I will definitely be sharing the recipe in the next week are so, but these things are DELICIOUS. I like to heat mine up in the microwave for about 20 seconds, and it tastes like it just came out of the oven.

I seriously love my roommate. She is such a great person and has a heart of gold. She made some salad (she makes yummy healthy food all the time), and shared some with me. It had spinach leaves, little organic blueberries, pine nuts, and some other things I can’t remember. It was really good and just makes me love her even more that she appreciates healthy food and nutrition.

I’m trying to clean out my pantry right now, so I can make room for a Whole Foods and Central Market run this weekend. That means that I am eating a lot of whole wheat pasta. Oh that isn’t gluten-free. My stomach isn’t a fan, but I just keep telling myself “Whole Foods, Whole Foods, I’m doing it for Whole Foods”. I mix in a little broccoli, garlic, and sometimes some tomato sauce (just not in this picture). Due to the fiber in the pasta and the broccoli, I’m pretty full for a while.

Night Time snack 1: Some cinnamon roll pudding with gluten free chocolate chips, banana slices, and a ripped up chocolate pumpkin muffin. Oh man this sweet treat is definitely the way to go when you are trying to satisfy that late night sweet tooth. This snack has actually inspired me to make some epic desserts in the near future, so stay tuned for a good recipe in the next week or so.

Night Snack 2: Yes, I get the munchies at night time and need to eat like everything. This snack is a Oikos strawberry greek yogurt, 20 calorie cocoa powder, gluten free chocolate chips, and strawberry slices. Seeing a trend here? I like chocolate and pudding like things. This snack is really good. I was hesitant about adding the cocoa powder, but I saw it on another blog somewhere and wanted to try it. It was like a chocolate covered strawberry. You could taste both flavors.

Since school is back in session, I will now be sharing some fashion with ya’ll. I love clothing, so this is a fun outlet for me. I’m wearing a strapless polka dot dress from Shop 344, a black cardigan from Nordstroms, and a necklace & belt from Forever 21. I forgot to show my shoes, which were slightly wedged black glitter gladiator sandals from Steve Madden.

The Best Meal of My Life

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I’ve been gone. Life has been hectic, and yesterday I didn’t have my computer with me since I went to Austin to celebrate my dad’s birthday. So the best meal of my life. Well no, I would have to say it was one of the top 5 best meals of my life in America. So this meal was not on my Healing Diet at all, but you can’t run your life around certain rules because that would make you have a sort of eating disorder. We want to be healthy, not crazy. Anyways on to the greatest meal EVER. My dad picked to go to the Barley Swine for his birthday dinner.

The Barley Swine is a small restaurant off of South Lamar in Austin, TX. You have to get there 30 minutes before opening because that is how great this place is. People line up outside the building to get a spot inside. We had to wait outside in 106 degree heat, but after sweating to death this was totally worth it. The menu is tapas style, which means that you need to order about 3-4 plates per person. These are small plates, so it is not like you are consuming whole racks of lamb. There was five of us, only about 10 things on the menu, and three specials. Being the foodie family we are, we decided to literally get everything except the foie gras.

So the presentation on every plate was BEAUTIFUL. This was a scrambled duck egg, pecans, green bean salad, and morels. This is probably one of my favorite dishes of the night. I never thought a scrambled duck egg would be that mind blowing, but it was. This dish was pretty much on the top of everyone’s lists at the end of the night.

What is this beauty? Well fried head of course? FRIED HEAD!?! I know when I saw the description on the menu, I thought it was like an entire animal head that was fried. No. It was just a shrimp head that was fried served along with a couple of broiled shrimps in a delicious sauce topped with sesame seeds. It was awesome. I am now in love with fried heads. Yes, saying that out loud sounds very weird, but I’m not one for caring what others think.

Yes this soup tastes as good as it looks. Actually it looks sort of chunky and weird, but trust me when I say that the flavors of this soup are the yummiest combination that your mouth will ever experience. It is a corn soup with coconut, tamarind, thai green chiles, and plums. Weird sounding, but so delicious. We gobbled this up in like 5 seconds. My grandpa is a soup connoisseur and he thought it was fantastic.

I’m Jewish and I eat pork, so what. With pork this good, I would never refuse. This dish was pork belly served over curried eggplant puree, cous cous, and pickled peach. Curry with pork belly and peaches? Yes, it is so good. The curry flavor was probably the best part of the entire dish. The pork belly was so soft and tender. It just melted in your mouth. I could have gone for like ten of these.

I love fish. Actually I have recently decided that I am going to go pescatarian once I clean out my fridge, but that is a story for another time. When I saw crispy red fish on the menu, I was like sign me up we are getting two of these. It was served with green chile grits, pickled corn, and avocado. Being from the south, I already love grits, but these were on a whole different level. With the blackened fish, it was the perfect bite. My brother and I were big fans of the dish.

Sort of creepy? Well yes it does look like a circular form of meat. What is this? It is goat shoulder. You ate goat shoulder? Yes, and it was freaking good. Once you put your fork into it the meat pulled apart like pulled pork or something like that. It was extremely tasty. I’m a big fan.

For the rest of the meal, I’m just going to post pictures instead of describing everything because it will be like the longest post in the entire world. I’ll just let you drool over the most amazing meal and make you jealous of what I got to eat and what you didn’t.

Pig face….Yep and it was freaking tasty. It tasted like a Jewish Brisket. Delicious.

I know I said I wasn’t going to talk about anything else, but this was probably my favorite plate of the night. It was quail stuffed with goose liver (pate) served over charred leek and dirty rice with a side of corn cakes. Oh man oh man do I love some goose liver. The quail was so tender and when paired with a bite of the corn cake, it was like pure happiness was inside my mouth.

Donut stuffed with jalapeno jam and a side of goat cheeseI lied again. I have to talk about this. It was corn brulee with white chocolate, popcorn, and goat milk’s caramel. This sounds so weird, but it was so good. Definitely one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. My family fought over it because it was so tiny. I only got one bite, which made me sad.

This was the finale of the meal. Grilled peach, marsala, goats milk icecream, and a black pepper crumble. This dish sums up summertime for me. Peaches, the grill, and cold ice cream. It was the best way to end the meal. I was definitely satisfied. It was an amazing meal with my family, and it will definitely go down in the history books! Just another Happy Birthday to my dad! My brother and I are epic fails at life because we forgot his present at the house. Way to go. We are great kids, I know.

The Art of Asian Brunch

Hey ya’ll! We are almost half way through the week, hurrah! I thought for today I would talk about another type of place that you can go out to eat at when you adopt Your Healing Diet. As we can tell from my sushi post, I love Asian food. Not only is it tasty, but is it also very healthy for you if you know how to manage your way through a menu. No wonder most Asians are very thin! One of my favorite Asian meals is Chinese Dim Sum. In my mind, I like to think of it as an Asian brunch. Brunch and Asian food: two of my favorite things. My favorite place to go in Austin is Chinatown, so one Saturday my brother, dad, and I decided to treat ourselves.

I love the decor and atmosphere of Chinatown because it is not kitschy. Instead it has a modern and sleek style with a few classic Chinese symbols around the restaurant. Anyways, dim sum does not start until 11 and I recommend making reservations because this place gets extremely crowded real quick. The way Dim Sum works is that the waiters come around with carts filled with delicious food, you pick what you want of the cart, and the waiter will mark it on your sheet. The prices are based on the size of the dish, so there is small, medium, large, extra large, and specialty.

We started out the meal with many dishes, but one of my favorite is the shrimp toasts. While this item does not exactly fit the Your Healing Diet, I believe that you cannot completely restrict yourself especially when you are first switching to a mainly plant based diet. I personally love seafood, so I will never be able to give that up. Anyways, the shrimp toast was perfect crisp and not soggy like it is at other dim sum locations.

The pot stickers at Chinatown are seriously amazing. They pan fry them right in front of you in a dumpling cart. It feels like you are eating legitimate food from the streets of Beijing, but you are really just sitting in a comfy chair in a restaurant. The outsides of the dumplings are perfect mix of crispiness from being pan-fried and the softness from the dumpling wrapper, and the vegetables inside are a nice blend that provides a good crunch when you bite into the dumplings. The dumpling cart is one of my brother’s favorite things at Dim Sum.

One of my dad’s favorite dishes is the salt and pepper shrimp. It is lightly battered and gives a nice spicy taste when you bite into it. The batter provides a crunch as you bite it, but then the warm juices of the shrimp burst into your mouth when you start chewing on it. I’m not going to lie, but this is definitely one of their best dishes. Not to mention that all of their shrimp dishes are extremely delicious. You can eat battered items like this in moderation. We split this between three people, so each person got about two shrimps. That will definitely not put any significant dent in your caloric budget or your healthy lifestyle.

We enjoyed tons of goodies at Dim Sum, and I left a happy camper. The best part was that I wasn’t extremely full because what we ate was very low calorie and pretty healthy for you. I recommend that everyone goes out to get some Dim Sum immediately, and if you are going to Healthy Living Summit and I happen to be there then let me take you to get some since I used to live in Boston for a while! I know my good eats there.

 

 

 

 

 

I hope you enjoyed my review of Chinatown in Austin. If you are ever in the neighborhood you should go. It is in north Austin, but totally worth the trip (although I live close by, so it isn’t a problem for me).

Before I go I have to share the most perfect dish ever: Avocado stuffed with crab and shrimp. Hello perfection, I do love you. It is creamy and warm. The flavors of the dish explode in your mouth and come together in a great combination.
