Seattle on the Mind

Hey ya’ll! I hope everyone had a good Friday. I ended up sleeping about 12 hours, which was much needed. I’m still sort of tired, but there is a Disney movie marathon on ABC family (HECK YES). Not to mention that….

65515_3847089145135_682114429_nMy best friend is back in Austin for the weekend! I’m so happy because I haven’t seen her since October, which was sooo long ago. We are going to be spending a ton of time together in the next few months. She is here this long weekend, I’m going to NYC in februrary, and then we are going to Ultra Music Festival in Miami in March! I love her. Anyways back to more important things like what I’m going to talk about today. More fun things about my trip to Seattle.

DSCN0113We decided to wake up somewhat early (10 am lol) to go get brunch at a place called Portage Bay Cafe. Funny story is that my dad just typed in portage bay into his phone, so we ended up driving to some residential neighborhood in Seattle. After we ended up having a 45 minute wait, we decided to drive around and look at the University of Washington (I wouldn’t mind going there for my masters). It was so beautiful, but then we went back to the restaurant to get our grub on.

DSCN0115Hello to this gorgeous plate. My brother ended up getting the lemon curd french toast for breakfast. When you ordered certain items on the menu, you got to use and abuse their breakfast bar. The bar was filled with various fruits, whipped topping, syrup, brown sugar, and some dried fruit. It was heavenly. The lemon curd was tart and delicious. The added toppings just added to this perfect dish. My brother wanted to burst afterwards.

DSCN0117He also ordered a side of potatoes to share with me. They were perfectly seasoned and crisped to perfection. I’m glad he ordered them because I needed something to go with my meal.

DSCN0114I ended up ordering the steel cut oats. This meant that I got to use the amazing breakfast bar. I topped mine with some brown sugar and fruit. I had strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, some local type of berry, and some raisins. In my mind it was just okay. I personally think I make better oatmeal, but then again how can you really screw up oatmeal. I was trying to eat somewhat healthy, which is why I didn’t choose something else.

DSCN0086This building was so pretty and unique. We ended up going to the EMB musuem, which was dedicated to music. It pretty much only had rock music in it. Obviously not my favorite, but my dad wanted to go so we went along with it.

DSCN0099One of the coolest parts of the museum was that there was this room where you could play various musical instruments and have jam sessions. My brother and I jacked one of the jam rooms, which had a drum set and two types of guitars on it. I definitely rocked out the drums (I had no idea what I was doing) and my brother jammed on the electric guitar. It was hilarious. We then left the room and went to a mixing board. It was kid like fun.

DSCN0093Probably my favorite part of the museum was the leather jacket exhibit. I am a huge fan of leather. Seriously I go no where without my leather coat. It was definitely one of the greatest investment pieces in my wardrobe. Anyways they had the coolest jackets on exhibit there like this one above. I love crazy prints. There were other jackets with studs, jewels, and colors. It was leather jacket heaven.

thFor dinner that night, we ended up going to a place that was on Diners, Drive-ins, and dives. My brother and I were so stoked because it is one of our favorite shows. The place we went for dinner was called Bizarros. It was definitely a bizarre place.

DSCN0118The lighting is a wee bit weird because inside the restaurant the lights were dimmed with an orange hue. Also there were crazy things hanging from the ceiling such as upside down bicycles, a recliner chair, and a window frame. For one of the appetizers, we ordered the mussels. They were so divine. The restaurant is Italian, so they had the classic flavors. My brother and dad ended up using the bread to eat up all the sauce in the bowl too. It was just that good.

DSCN0119My brother has a love for bruschetta, so he ordered that for our second appetizer. I was expecting the classic dish with diced vegetables on top, but oh how I was wrong (in a good way). The perfectly toasted bread was topped with goat cheese, figs, and a delicious honey based sauce. It was a sweet version of the dish. I had died and gone to foodie heaven. No wonder this place was on diners, drive-ins, and dives.

DSCN0125I definitely ordered the best main course. I got the wild mushroom tagilatelle. Oh my, how delicious it was. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly and the creamy sauce went well with the noddles and mushrooms. It was so good that my brother and dad were eating it too along with their dishes. Hungry guys, typical. If you are ever in Seattle, you definitely have to go here. It is so much fun and the staff is extremely friendly!

I hope ya’ll have a good Saturday. I know I will. I’m going on epic adventures with my two best friends. I better go get ready.

What I Ate Wednesday

Man, oh man. It is time for another What I ate Wednesday post thanks to the amazing Jenn over at Peas & Crayons. This has been a crazy week for me. I finally have started back in school. FINAL YEAR. Yes, this will be my second senior year. I’m just glad I still have more time to figure out things for my post-undergraduate life such as, finally deciding to get my masters in sports nutrition, where I’m going to apply for grad school and RD internship, and random goals for myself. Blah blah blah. Okay, I’ll get to the food pictures.

I am back to enjoying pancakes in the morning! Lately I’ve been trying to eat completely gluten free (Obviously someone didn’t get the memo while in Boston), so when I found out that Bisquick has made a gluten free pancake and waffle mix I grabbed it off the shelves to sample. It is actually pretty good. Being typical Lindsay, I have to spice it up by making creative pancakes, so I threw in some pumpkin, chocolate chips, and banana slices to complete the meal. Only 1/3 c of the powder makes about 5-6 pancakes, so it is pretty impressive and low calorie.

How that I’m back in school, I have to start planning my meals and packing my lunch ahead of time. On Tuesdays, I have class from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm. It is definitely going to be a long day on Tuesdays, but with packing a healthy filling lunch I know I will be able to get through it all.

For my Tuesday lunch this week, I had a tofu stir fry with broccoli, peppers, carrots, mushrooms, and water chestnuts. It was all served on top of brown rice. For a side I had a sliced granny smith apple. This meal definitely held me over until I finished Advanced Food Science and headed back to my apartment.

For snack I’ve been munching on these amazingly low calorie sugar free chocolate pumpkin muffins. I will definitely be sharing the recipe in the next week are so, but these things are DELICIOUS. I like to heat mine up in the microwave for about 20 seconds, and it tastes like it just came out of the oven.

I seriously love my roommate. She is such a great person and has a heart of gold. She made some salad (she makes yummy healthy food all the time), and shared some with me. It had spinach leaves, little organic blueberries, pine nuts, and some other things I can’t remember. It was really good and just makes me love her even more that she appreciates healthy food and nutrition.

I’m trying to clean out my pantry right now, so I can make room for a Whole Foods and Central Market run this weekend. That means that I am eating a lot of whole wheat pasta. Oh that isn’t gluten-free. My stomach isn’t a fan, but I just keep telling myself “Whole Foods, Whole Foods, I’m doing it for Whole Foods”. I mix in a little broccoli, garlic, and sometimes some tomato sauce (just not in this picture). Due to the fiber in the pasta and the broccoli, I’m pretty full for a while.

Night Time snack 1: Some cinnamon roll pudding with gluten free chocolate chips, banana slices, and a ripped up chocolate pumpkin muffin. Oh man this sweet treat is definitely the way to go when you are trying to satisfy that late night sweet tooth. This snack has actually inspired me to make some epic desserts in the near future, so stay tuned for a good recipe in the next week or so.

Night Snack 2: Yes, I get the munchies at night time and need to eat like everything. This snack is a Oikos strawberry greek yogurt, 20 calorie cocoa powder, gluten free chocolate chips, and strawberry slices. Seeing a trend here? I like chocolate and pudding like things. This snack is really good. I was hesitant about adding the cocoa powder, but I saw it on another blog somewhere and wanted to try it. It was like a chocolate covered strawberry. You could taste both flavors.

Since school is back in session, I will now be sharing some fashion with ya’ll. I love clothing, so this is a fun outlet for me. I’m wearing a strapless polka dot dress from Shop 344, a black cardigan from Nordstroms, and a necklace & belt from Forever 21. I forgot to show my shoes, which were slightly wedged black glitter gladiator sandals from Steve Madden.

Hope everyone has had a fantastic week so far and Happy Humpday!

Do you pack your lunch for school or work?
What kind of things do you put in it?

Bahhston Day 2

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone has been having a great Friday. Mine has been pretty relaxing. I’ve been reading books, watching some movies, and I’m going out with my younger brother tonight to the UT volleyball game and to dinner (which has yet to be determined). Anyways, let me get back to my trip to Boston.

Friday morning I woke up, and decided to go on a little adventure while Carrianne was at work doing her thing at the Children’s Hospital. I wondered over to Newbury street, which has some of the greatest shopping and has a cute Boston feel to it with the brick buildings alongside both sides of the street.

As I was walking around looking at the shops, I stumbled upon Georgetown Cupcakes. The shop has been made famous by the TV show on TLC following the two sisters that own the company. My stomach was growling, and I wanted to see if the hype about the cupcakes was actually true.

They had tons of cupcakes on display and for sale inside the store. I got to see all this once I waited in line OUTSIDE for about 10 minutes. Apparently the shop was too crowded for people to go in, but really there were just a bunch of annoying girls standing in the way. When I finally got in, I had a hard time choosing what to eat, but I decided to have a gluten free cupcake since I wanted to be nice on my stomach. It was a gluten free lava fudge cupcake (picture will come later when I do a Boston Cupcake review post), and let me tell you it was actually pretty delicious. I went on my merry way with my cupcake and cup of fat free milk.

I was trying to hold off on buying anything because I had promised Carrianne that we would go shopping over the weekend since we both had come into some money. However, I stepped in the Steve Madden store and couldn’t resist (I have a problem with SM because their shoes are amazing). I ended up having to order a pair of boots to be shipped because they had run out of 10. If these shoes go on sale, I’m definitely going to get the tan ones too. They are that fabulous.

After a few more hours of strolling around Boston, Carrianne had texted me that she was walking home from work and wanted to meet at Dunkin Donuts. However, I was going at tortoise pace, so I just met her back at the apartment. Then it was time for dinner.

We went to Fish Market. It is seriously probably one of the best sushi places in Boston. It was quite a trek from Carrianne’s, and I wore uncomfortable shoes. Bad decision. I guess I forgot that we don’t live down the street anymore (oh how I miss that). We were supposed to meet one of our old roommates there, but she ended up not being able to come. Her loss because the food was AMAZING.

For an appetizer, I had Agi Dashi Tofu. It is a fried tofu served in a light shoyu broth with scallions. Oh man. This was a great way to start off the meal. The tofu was perfectly fried, and it was silken tofu so it fell apart when you bit into it. The broth was light, and the dish wasn’t filling at all, so I had room for a ton of sushi rolls.

For my first round, I had a Shiitake Mushroom Tempura Maki roll. There were only 4 pieces, which I was sad about, but the fried mushrooms in the roll were so good that I forgot about how small it was. The brown thing on the right is a fried tofu wrapper and the one of the top left is sweet egg omelet. My mind was blown with the tofu wrapper sushi. I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought I would try it since it is vegetarian friendly. Oh god I could have probably eaten like ten more of those, but I didn’t have time to stay at the restaurant all night.

My last roll was the Salmon Skin roll. It is salmon skin, bonito flakes, cream cheese, and cucumber. This is one of my favorite rolls at Fish Market because it tastes like bacon. Now that I don’t eat meat, except fish, this is the closest thing I will get to eating actual meat. Oh man. The crispiness of the salmon skin meshes perfectly with the smooth texture of the cream cheese. Definitely order this if you ever go here!

After dinner, we had to hurry back to the apartment because I needed to change because I was going out to a concert. My friend, David, had texted me asking me if I wanted to go with him and a few of his friends to some electronic show, so I decided why not. The artist we were going to see was Viceroy, so I put on my best raging outfit: high wasted white shorts, a see through lace black top, and a black bandeau.

This is David, and this photo is actually pretty old. The only photo I took of us this weekend is for another post much later on. He is pretty great. Anyways I met him and his friends at his old frat house over in Cambridge (Yeah, he went to MIT), and we headed over to the concert. One of the other groups was still performing when we got there, so we waited until the real party started. After the concert, we went back to his place and played Mario Kart for a while. Apparently I now suck at Mario Kart. Oh well, it was still really fun and I did get 1st once. Go me.

Hope everyone has a great Friday night! I’ll be back tomorrow with some more Boston fun.

Do you like Electronic Music?
If so, what is your favorite artist?

Fourteen Things Friday

Happy Friday, but really today is especially happy because it marks the end of summer school for me. I have somehow survived three demanding classes in a 5 week span. I’m not sure how I did it, but I’m still standing. I was actually going to do this post yesterday, but it was going to be called Ten Things Thursday. However I ended up having to study way more than I thought, deal with apartment things, and finish my research proposal. So now its fourteen things – I know you are excited to learn 4 more things about my life than you were originally supposed to know.

1. I have met my first blogger, and she is the sweetest thing ever. Min, who blogs over at Savor the Rainbow, is actually in my agriculture class (which is an awful class). I randomly found her blog one day, and was happy I did. Anyways to the point, she had made some muffins with the Wild Harvest Product from HLS and she let me sample one. THEY WERE AMAZING. Seriously it was the best snack I have had in class all month long. I was sad when it disappeared.
2. Speaking of agriculture, I’m done with summer school. Hallelujah. Although that final is sort of irritating me because the multiple choice part was a little harder than normal. At least in my opinion.

3. I’m going to Austin tomorrow. This means another trip to the Ice Queens snowcone trailer, and food adventures with my family. I also plan on doing some foodie pen pal shopping.

4. I’m having my first volleyball practice since a while ago on Sunday, and I couldn’t be more excited to see my girls. They are the cutest things ever. I will share a picture soon.

5. I decided to drown my agriculture final sorrows and my excitement for school to be over in some froyo from Crazy Good. I got White Chocolate Macadamia with chocolate sauce, strawberries, pineapple, jimmies, and gummy bears. Best treat for a hot day.
Yes, I have also discovered instagram – months later. Hello new addiction.

6. I have finally completely moved out of my old apartment, and I am into my new apartment Granted I still have a million boxes every where, but the main point is that I have a glorious new closet or should I say closets – as in two.
This photo doesn’t even do it justice because it chops off both sides. Also I have another bar under the clothes on the left for more of my clothing that is still in boxes. Remember, this is just my first closet! I love life.

7. I’m going to start volunteering at the Food Bank in San Marcos next week. I’m super excited to do something worthwhile for once. Also I’ll be researching more opportunities to help out the community in a food and health related way.

8. New snack alert. Normally I’m not a big eater of processed foods, but sometimes when you are sitting in class for 6 hours straight – you need easy snacks. In comes, fiber one cookie bars – SO much better than the brownies.
9. I’m going on a mini-vacation to Dallas with my mom and younger brother. Hopefully I can convince them to go to the Trader Joe’s in Fort Worth, but if not I’ll settle for H&M and a two story forever 21.

10. You guys must think all I eat is pancakes, but I really don’t. I just eat them on the weekends only. Anyways I’ll post up the recipe tomorrow and just share the picture now:
Lemon Raspberry Pancakes, so delicious with a nice tart taste.

12. I got a 101.6 in Accounting. I have to say that I’m pretty proud of myself. I’m a nutrition major that is a science girl, so going into accounting I was a bit scared from all the horror stories of the other nutrition majors. However, I was a boss and destroyed it.

13. I have a new favorite snack: Arctic Zero Vanilla Maple with banana slices, mini chocolate chips, and a little bit of sugar free syrup.
This is the perfect snack on a hot day plus it is pretty sweet and very low calorie. I mean the whole pint of ice cream is only about 150 calories.

14. I’m not sure I have announced it on my blog, but I’m going to Boston from August 16th-22nd. I’m really excited for many reason: 1. It is during HLS, so I’ll get to meet tons of bloggy buddies, 2. I get to see my best friend, 3. Best friend and I will go on epic food adventures, 4. I’ll get to pretend I have a fabulous city life for a week, and 5. I get to see someone special. I seriously love Boston, and I’m not just biased from having gone to college there.

I hope everyone has an amazing weekend. Mine is going to be filled with food, family, and fun. I can’t wait because I have needed this break for a long time.

Do you have any exciting news in your life right now?
Are you going to HLS in Boston?
