WIAW on Lindsay’s Personal Food Tour

Hey ya’ll! It is my favorite day of the week, What I Ate Wednesday, thanks to the lovely Jenn over at Peas and Crayons (seriously go check all the posts out, you won’t regret it). I have had something very special planned for this day. Since my brother’s last day in town was Tuesday, I had planned on taking him and his friend on a personal food tour designed by me. I originally had wanted to take them on a Free Tours by Foot in the Lower East side since there are so many great foodie options, but instead on Sunday we went to brunch. I promised that I would make an epic, delicious food tour that would leave us dragging around. On top of having great food, the weather was perfection. It was so hot that I wish I hadn’t been wearing tights. Now lets get to my tour!

First stop on the tour was Golden Steamer, which is located in Chinatown on Mott St. This local favorite, which was about a 4 and a half star on yelp, so you know it was going to be legit. The main focus of the store is steamed buns, which as you know are my favorite things in the world. They have many other options to pick from too. Classic dim sum items such as chung fung and steamed shrimp dumplings. You can either get steamed buns fresh or you can buy packages that you bring home to steam later. These contain 4 buns of whatever flavor of your choice. The best part about this place is that it is so freaking cheap.

We started off splitting a pork bun, which was amazeballs. The pork inside was so tender and sweet from the BBQ sauce. This was probably my favorite bun that we tried. It was so soft. I definitely want to back for more of these because it was like a little cloud from the sky. Not to mention that it was like 1$. Thank god this is so far away because I would live off of these if I could.

The second bun that we split was a red bean bun. It sort of tasted like frito bean dip inside a steamed bun. That was really interesting. I actually really enjoyed it. I tend to not like red bean paste things because sometimes it can get real funky, but this was surprisingly great. Still not as great as my pork bun, but it definitely was tasty.

Oh the great egg custard bun. You are so hard to find always, but when I find you it is the tastiest thing I have ever had. While it is no pork bun, it is a good second. The creaminess of the egg custard goes along perfectly with the soft texture of the steamed bun. I wish I would have gotten some more of these for all of us to snack on during our walk or at least my huge trek later back to campus. Anyways so far we were 1/1 on going to a delicious, cheap, and foodie approved place. The shop is really small, which is why we had to eat all the buns standing outside. No shame.

After our steamed buns, we headed over to Eldridge st in order to hit up the iconic Prosperity Dumpling over in Chinatown. This place is known for their super cheap dumplings with deals like 5 fried dumplings for 1$ (however this has now changed and it is 4 for 1$, but still such a good deal). They have other items on the menu like scallion pancakes, noodle soups, and other appetizers. However most people come here for the dumplings. The shop is incredibly small. There is barely any room to sit down. We were lucky enough to beat the lunch crowd, so we got to sit down and enjoy our dumplings.

We ended up getting an order of the fried pork and chive dumplings to split. These were delicious. The outside was crispy in some spots and soft in others. It wasn’t too greasy. The dumplings were so hot, so they were really freshly cooked for us. The inside was delicious. The pork was mixed well with the chive. You could top the dumplings with three sauces, so we chose the no label dark sauce. My brother ended up shooting half of it across the table, but it eventually got onto the dumplings. It was like a sweet soy sauce for dumplings.

We decided that we should be somewhat healthy and get steamed dumplings too. These were cabbage and pork dumplings. They were 10 for 2.75$, so still such a good deal. We had to wait a little bit longer for these since steaming takes longer than frying dumplings. These were so good. I was glad that we ended up getting a second order of dumplings. They were soft and packed with tons of flavor. It sort of reminded me of soup dumplings because when you bit inside the dumpling there was the juice from steaming the pork dumpling. We topped it again with the sweet sauce, which this time my brother didn’t spill. Winning. Off to the next place.

Before we went to our next stop, we had to pit stop at the Bank of America because my smart little brother forgot to get any cash. This is the one problem with living in the city. There are too many cash only places in the city, so you always have to be prepared with having cash on you. Onwards to Cheeky’s Sandwiches, which is located in the Lowest East Side. This was New Orleans style place with tons of sandwiches.

I ended up going with the Chicken sandwich, which pretty much looks like a little version of Whataburger’s famous Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit. However this one had fried chicken, buttermilk biscuit, cole slaw, and gravy. This was so good. The biscuit was tender, which went well with the crispy crunchiness of the chicken. The coleslaw was a nice mix to place on top because it wasn’t gross like normal coleslaw. We ended up splitting all the sandwiches by passing them around and having a few bites at a time of each sandwich.

My brother’s friend ended up getting the beef sandwich, which was my favorite by far. It was braised short rib, horseradish sauce, arugala, cherry tomatoes, and served on challah bread. CHALLAH. This is seriously a Jew’s favorite menu item. It was perfection. I love anything served on challah, but when you combine brisket and horseradish sauce on top of it. OMG NOM NOM NOM. I definitely am going to go back here just to get this sandwich. It is totally worth the trek.

My brother went with a classic choice of the oyster po’boy. He may have not been born in New Orleans like my older brother and I, but he knows good seafood when he sees it. These oysters were crunchy and delicious. It was a very simple sandwich in order to keep the main focus on the oysters, so it was topped with lettuce, tomato, and a spicy sauce. I really liked it, but the sauce was a little too much for me. He loved it though. He gobbled it down and kept trying to grab it from us when it was our turn to eat it. We had ginger brew with the meal too. My brother had a passion fruit one while his friend and I had pomegranate. They were really delicious with a nice kick of ginger. Afterwards we had to walk a while to let our stomachs rest.

Next up on the tour was Prince St Pizza, which was located in Noho. It was your pretty basic mom and pop pizza shop that has had a ton of celebrities roll through this joint. I know this because the wall is decorated with famous people and the pizza shop workers. It was a really quick get your pizza and go kind of place. Luckily there were a few tables inside, so we could sit down and enjoy our pizza.

We ended up just getting two slices of margherita pizza to split between the three of us. I mean just look at those slices. The shop is known for their homemade mozzarella, so we obviously went with something that used it as the star. The cheese was melted so great, so when you took a bite into the pizza it just pulled and became stringy from your mouth to the pizza. I was in a food coma at this point. It was a struggle to get the pizza in my body. Afterwards we trekked back to the Lower East Side, so I could take the kiddos to Yonah Schimmels Knish Shop. I ended up just getting some Knish’s to go for my date from the other night, but the kids ended up getting a cheese knish with apple. It looked really good. I’m not sure how they ended up cramming it all into their stomachs, but props to them.

Sushi Time!

Hey ya’ll! I survived my first day of full class. I have class from 3-9 pretty much with small breaks in between each class. By the end of the day, I had a headache. I think it was because I didn’t eat enough, but my last class of the day is sort of boring. It is a research methods class, which I find that I don’t need since I can read research, I’ve worked in a research lab, and I wrote a review paper to be published. Hmmmm. Can I just not take it pretty please? I’ll suck it up and survive though. The professor is at least this hilarious older guy who lived in Austin for 8 years, so hook em! On to the fooood. This weekend, Carrianne and I went to have dinner with a friend of ours from BU over in Brooklyn where he lives. Let me tell you something about Brooklyn. It has delicious food, but OMG it is so far away on the train from where we live. Not to mention the fact that the L just sits at 8th ave FOREVER! Lets distract my anger towards the train by thinking about my favorite food: SUSHI!

We ended up going to this really cute place in Williamsburg called 1 or 8. At first we couldn’t figure out where it was because the sign on the door was incredibly tiny. We weren’t sure if it was the place or not until I eventually saw it say 1 or 8 on the wall. When we walked in the hostess asked if we had a reservation, which we said no to and then she went away for a few minutes. At first we were a bit like what? Since there was not many people there at the time we went. However she came back with menus and took us into this really cute room with branches all along the wall. It definitely had an awesome atmosphere.

The menus were the cutest things. Each menu was on a clipboard. The main menu had about 4-5 pages. The drink menu came on a super tiny and adorable clipboard. It was just a super fun place to be. It was definitely a hip spot because there were huge groups of people. I was excited as I flipped through the menu looking at all the possibilities. I did think it was super hilarious that they had fish and chips or croquettes on the menu. It was like a Japanese fusion type of restaurant.

So pretty much all of my photos are going to be dark because the restaurant decided to have some romantic lighting by candlelight only. Therefore I think only about one of my photos turned out perfect.  We started out with some edamame because all three of us were starving. We were popping these things into our mouths like crazy. We went through this bowl pretty fast, but by the time we were done our food was there. Our friend Jason ended up getting Miso soup with his meal. He let me have a bite and it was delicious. The tofu in it was made fresh at the restaurant.

My dark plate of sushi. Oh how I love thee. You were so delicious and tasty. The roll in the front was called a salmon mozzarella roll. It had salmon, mozzarella, semi-dried tomato, and yuzu tobiko. It came along with a basil dipping sauce. Wow this roll was delicious. At first I was skeptical because Carrianne said she had a bad experience with a cheese roll, but I thought why not go for it anyways? It was a good decision. It tasted a bit like bacon rolled in mozzarella cheese. In my mind it was Italian style sushi. My other roll was yellowtail mango. I love mango, so that is really the only reason I decided to get this roll. The roll obviously had yellowtail and mango, but it contained jalapenos too. It came along with a cilantro sauce, which was to die for. The roll was fruity and fresh. The quality of the fish was high, which made the place so appealing. I always hate when the fish isn’t up to par.

Here is Carrianne’s dark plate of sushi. She ended up getting a salmon skin roll and a few pieces of nigiri. She enjoyed all of her sushi and said the fish was so delicious.

Why did Jason’s plate of sushi come out in a normal color? I will never understand this. He ended up getting one of the sushi plates. It came with around 7 pieces of different types of nigiri and one sushi roll. His sushi roll was huge. It was stuffed with tuna, squash, and a wide assortment of other vegetables. He really seemed to like it. I don’t understand how people fit those huge pieces into their mouths and eat it like a normal person. I swear I look so uncivilized when I’m eating large pieces of sushi.

I saw this when we were walking to 1 or 8 and thought it was cute. I think I only like it because it says Jewish, but it was also neat that they had a bunch of street art around the city. Ya’ll know how much I love street art. Anyways 1 or 8 is definitely a good place to go for sushi. It is worth the trek out to Brooklyn if you don’t already live there. The prices are extremely decent. Averages from 10-13$ for a fancy/crazy roll while simple rolls are 4.50-6.50.

Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Hey ya’ll! It is Friday, which I couldn’t be happier about. I feel like weekends are still magical even when I’m not in school. Funny story about last night though. I had a major panic attack at 11 pm last night and emailed my adviser at school about 4 times. When I transferred back from Boston, I had to get approval for all of these hours since Texas is weird and requires all of these dumb credits (like Texas History – will not use that class ever), so I needed to make sure that I was still under the minimum hours of transfer credit allowed. However I convinced myself that I had way too many transfer hours and that I wasn’t going to be able to graduate and go to grad school. Luckily my adviser told me I was crazy (no he didn’t, but I bet he was thinking I was) and that I was fine. Thank god. I was going to go cry to someone at the university or something to make it better. Since that was so stressful, I have an awesome and delicious recipe to share with ya’ll! Cauliflower pizza crust. Sounds kind of gross, but oh my buhjeezus is this stuff good!

Cauliflower Pizza Crust

2 cups of grated cauliflower
1/2 c of finely chopped basil
1/3 c of liquid egg whites
1 egg
2 c of fat free shredded mozzarella cheese

1. Preheat the oven to 450. Then you  need to cook the cauliflower. I used frozen cauliflower, so I just boiled some water, threw in the cauliflower, covered, and let cook in boiling water for 4 minutes. Once it was done cooking, I removed it from the water by draining it in the sink. Then I placed it in a food processor to chop into small bits. I then placed two cups into a mixing bowl.

2. The first time I made this recipe, I finely chopped all the basil by hand. That took forever. New and smarter plan is to throw the amount of basil you want into the food processor and chop it until you have fine pieces. Throw the basil into the mixing bowl with the cauliflower.

3. Then add the liquid egg whites, cheese, and 1 egg into the mixing bowl. Stir well until it is a thick clump.

4. Get a cookie sheet and place a piece of parchment paper over it. Spray the paper with non-stick cooking spray.

5. Grab clumps of the “dough” to make 4 mini pizzas. You keep adding to each pile until they are about the same. Then place the pizzas into the oven for 20 minutes. If the pizzas are not as crispy as you would like, add another 5 minutes to the time. However be careful of burning them.

6. Once you remove from the oven, add on toppings that you would like. I made one pizza with tomato paste, fat free slices of ham, and pineapple. The other pizza had mushrooms, onions, and sliced tomatoes on top of it. Both pizzas were topped with fat free mozzarella and a sprinkle of low moisture mozzarella. My mom topped her pizzas with a larger amount of cheese. It just depends on how many calories you want to consume from cheese.

7. You then place the pizza back into the oven until the cheese has completely melted. This could either be very quick or slow, depending on the type of cheese you have topped your pizza with.

Hello to cheesy goodness. You seriously can’t even tell that the crust is made from cauliflower. The basil and cheese masks that pungent cauliflower flavor, and provides a nice savory flavor to the dish. The crust wasn’t extremely crispy, so I recommend going light on the sauce. I learned my lesson from the first time we attempted this recipe. I was in charge of putting on the sauce, which I overloaded on and it soaked through the crust and all over the pan. It was still delicious though. You can cut the pizza into four little slices too. However it will not be like a perfectly cooked slice of pizza from Italy where it just flops. It takes some napkins to eat these. It is also really good as left overs.

The Hawaiian pizza was definitely my favorite. Later on when we made more, I decided to use a honey BBQ sauce for my base instead of tomato sauce. Best decision ever. It was amazing. This is now my go to healthy recipe. It provides you with tons of fiber, it is low calorie, and it is a tasty option when eating healthy. I can’t wait to try all different kinds of toppings. Mexican pizza? Pesto pizza? You bet I have all kinds of crazy ideas swirling around in my head right now. My mom and I are such fans of this recipe that we have already made it three times and she just bought more cauliflower today, so we could eat it again. Noms. Go out and make these immediately! You definitely won’t regret it.

A Healthy Meatball Sub

Hey ya’ll! It is Thursday. My week is actually pretty relaxing since now all I will be doing is working on research and other little science nerd projects. I have an awesome recipe to share with ya’ll! I love meatball sub sandwiches that are rich in cheese, sauce, and meat. However those things are totally not calorie friendly. Instead I decided to brainstorm my own healthy recipe for a meatball sub and I came up with something pretty delicious if I do say so myself!

Healthy Meatball Sub Sandwich

6-7 veggie patch meatless meatballs
2 super thin slices of mozzarella cheese
1 tbsp of Contadina low calorie Tomato sauce
2 slices of sandwich thins
non-stick cooking spray

1. First you need to microwave the vegetable meatballs in the microwave. The box said 20 seconds, but it took me around 40 seconds to almost a minute in some cases because they would not get hot enough.

2. Then place all the meatballs in an orderly pattern on one slice of bread.

3. Take a few thin slices of mozzarella and place on the meatballs. If you want it to be super cheesy, I would add more cheese. However you should remember that the calories add up when you consume more cheese.

4. Turn on your panini machine and spray both sides of the bread with non-stick cooking spray. Place onto the panini machine and cook until the cheese is completely melted. Turn the machine off and carefully take off the sandwich.

5. Take off one slice of bread and pour on the 1 tbsp of sauce. Make sure you don’t spill it because that will lead to one messy sandwich. I would recommend wrapping it in a paper towel as you eat it because the sauce can sometimes leak out of the bottom if it isn’t thick enough.

Noms. This sandwich is so good. A normal sub sandwich that you could get at Subway or at another sandwich shop can contain around 650 calories, 25-40 g of fat, and 56-60 g of carbohydrates. That is an excessive amount of fat that is in one menu item plus the amount of calories is way more than one should be spending on one sandwich. My sandwich contains 290 calories, 7 g of fat, and 25 g of carbohydrates. That is definitely a better switch and in my opinion a tastier option. Those other meatball sandwiches usually taste artificial to me unless you order from a legit Italian restaurant. I am definitely using this as my treat every once and a while with fresh mozzarella. I love when cheese melts to the point that it is stringy. Seriously who doesn’t like cheese?!? Obviously if you don’t, you need therapy. These meatless meatballs were really good too. They were packed with various spices and flavors. They were so good that my mom went out to buy another box and we ended up finding falafel too, which I’m excited to eat soon. Falafel sandwich will definitely be a new trend. Noms. I have a weakness for falafel. Jew problems. Or maybe falafel is just that good!

I love the way the bread gets browned too by the panini machine. A panini machine may be one of the best inventions I’ve ever seen or owned (besides my kitchen aid mixer). You can make tons of things on a grilling machine. There was actually an awesome post on buzzfeed with like 25 things you can make on one. I will definitely have to try out some of those recipes! I hope you all have an awesome day. I’m going to be getting my nerd on and researching angiogenesis on prostate cancer with broccoli and tomatoes effects on this process. Go functional foods!

Eggplant Parmesan Gets Healthified

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone is having a good Saturday. I swear I am getting so forgetful these days. I just remembered that I had a paper due at midnight tonight in my online philosophy class. It is not a fun assignment either. Boo to doing work. Luckily my mom and I are working on a delicious baked good hat I will definitely be sharing with ya’ll in a couple of days. Until then I’m going to have to share another delicious recipe with ya’ll: Eggplant parmesan. Eggplant parm can pack in a ton of unnecessary calories, but if you follow this recipe then you will be able to lose weight while eating great!

Healthified Eggplant Parmesan
1 eggplant
1-2 tsp of extra virgin olive oil
1 fresh tomato
1/2 c. of tomato sauce
6-8  thin slices of mozzarella
1 tbsp of Italian seasoned bread crumbs
pinch of salt

photo(5)1. Preheat oven to 375. Slice eggplant lengthwise into slices and place on a baking sheet. Sprinkle salt on top of the slices and drizzle a little bit of olive oil on each piece.

2. Cook in the oven for around 20 minutes or until the eggplant appears slightly brown.

3. Then place a small amount of sauce on each slice of eggplant (I had around four slices of eggplant, so it didn’t take that much sauce to cover lightly). Then add on 2-3 slices of tomato on each piece of eggplant. Next you add 1-2 slices of the mozzarella cheese (make sure that each slice of cheese is pretty thin that way you won’t be consuming a ton of calories and you will get the great meltability that you want). Finally sprinkle on some breadcrumbs and place into the oven.

photo(4)4. Cook in the oven at 400 degrees until the cheese is completely melted. Then remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes until warm enough to take off the pan.

photo(1)I am in love with this dish. A great thing to serve along with it would be spaghetti squash (just another vegetable that I’m obsessed with). The cheese, when it melts, provides a nice creamy flavor to the crunch of the crisped breadcrumbs. The eggplant is soft from being cooked, yet it is crisp on the outside. It provides a nice contrast in your mouth. Also by only having a thin amount of sauce, there is not a ton of mess from this fantastic dish.

Italian food is one of the best good genres in my opinion, well besides Asian of course. However Italian food comes along with tons of empty calories and high fattening foods, so it is important to either modify the recipe or make smart choices when you are eating out! I hope ya’ll like this recipe because I know I did. Have an awesome rest of the night. I’m going back into the nerd world of writing papers. The things I do to make it to graduation.

Easy Caprese Sandwich

Hey ya’ll! Today was my official last day of class. I am so excited. I had an exam, which I think I rocked because I finished in 18 minutes. Go Lindsay. Anyways lets get on to the good stuff: food. One thing I love to enjoy is anything with mozzarella and tomatoes. What does that sound like? Caprese salad. However those ingredients can get really heavy in calories, so I thought why not create a light version? Then I had the greatest idea to combine it with my love for pressed paninis. Best decision ever.

2 slices of 40 calorie bread
4-5 slices of tomato
a few extremely thin slices of fresh mozzarella
fresh basil leafs

photo(4)1. Turn on your pannini machine to medium-high heat and let it warm up.

2. Take your tomato slices, mozzarella slices, and basil and put it on one side of the bread.

photo(1)3. Place the other piece of bread on top and spray both sides with non-stick cooking spray.

4. Once the machine is heated, place your sandwich in the press and make sure it is tight on the bread.

5. Once the cheese has melted, remove the sandwich from the press and enjoy.

photo(3)Look at the melty goodness of this sandwich. If you want to make a good grilled cheese or have a sandwich with a melted cheese, you are better off using a fresh, full fat version. The fat free versions of cheese don’t melt well because they lack a multitude of ingredients that are in fresh cheese. This was such a good treat to have. I will definitely be making this sandwich a lot. I think next time I’m going to add some pesto on the bread to bring in a nice combination of flavors.
