Preserve24: A Boozy, Delicious Brunch

Hey ya’ll! It is Monday and my oh my am I tired. I had to be up at 6 am in order to go to the Bronx for a project that I am working on. I’m working on examining local school lunches at a Bronx school in order to see what the kids are actually eating and how we can improve the nutrition that the kids are getting. Today was just a practice run to see how everything would be done and how we would collect the data, but lets just say that what the kids ate was pretty interesting. Anyways on to fun things, such as New York’s infamous unlimited brunch. That is the only way to brunch I feel like. My brother, his friend, and one of my friends ended up heading over to Preserve24 in the Lower East Side for a delicious and epic brunch.

Obviously we had to start off the meal with our drinks. As soon as we sat down all of us ordered unlimited mimosas. I thought it was a pretty good deal to just pay $15 for unlimited drink and then choose your entree, which could range from 11-20$. You had the option of getting sangria or mimosas. I personally like something light with my heavy meal, so I went with the mimosas. The waitress was the bomb. She kept these things flowing like no other, and even left a pitcher on the table (refilled every time that we ran out).

Many people in the reviews on yelp and friends that we know told us that the truffle fries are a must get, so you know we were going to start out with that. We got it as an appetizer to split between the four of us. This was such a good decision. The truffle fries were cooked to perfection, so they were crispy yet not burnt. The parmesan cheese on the top was a nice addition. It melted all over the fries, so that they were evenly covered. I also liked that the fries were mixed with parsley because it gave it a nice flavor and freshness.

My brother is a huge pastry fanatic, so we ended up going with a pastry basket as the second brunch appetizer to split between the four of us. It came with a chocolate croissant, a regular croissant, a chocolate chip chocolate muffin, and a banana nut muffin. All of the pastries were actually quite delicious, so I was happy that we got this. It was also served with a apple butter, which everyone put on the plain croissant. It was nice to get a taste of everything.

My little brother and friend ended up getting the Croque Monster, which I thought was incredibly cute for a name. It came with pane de costa, smoked ham, gruyere, truffle fries, mornay, and a sunny egg. This was delicious. My friend let me have a bite of hers and I definitely would have gotten this for my meal. I love that it had the crunchiness from the fries and the toast, but the middle with the egg, cheese, and meat was soft. Every bite was a perfect combination of everything on the plate.

My brother’s friend ended up going for the L.E.S. Sandwich. It was definitely a hard thing to decide what to eat as the main entree because all of these looked so good. This had a runny egg, a fried oyster, and and smoked bacon. Obviously anything with a fried oyster and smoked bacon is going to be some of the best tasting food you will ever have. This was no exception. I was in foodie heaven at this point. This sandwich was good. My brother and his friend ended up splitting both of their dishes, which I thought was pretty smart because there were so many items on the menu that looked amazing (she originally wanted to get the bacon waffle, but it was sold out at that time :(. )

I have saved the best for last. My meal choice, which was the Lobster Benedict. Oh Preserve24, how I love thee. You are definitely one of the best dishes that I have ever had. I was in foodie heaven. The lobster was incredibly fresh and it went along great with the hollandaise sauce. The english muffins were toasted perfectly. I don’t usually gravitate towards Eggs Benedict, but I could not pass up something with lobster. I have a lobster weakness as you can tell from my last post. I definitely recommend getting this, especially if you are a lobster fan. You will not be disappointed and if you are doing the boozy brunch then you probably will feel pretty great at that moment too.

God I could stare at that big plate of food forever. The best part was my friend and I were feeling really great from the mimosas, so we walked around the east village all the way to Union Square. From there we met up with her dad to go to the MoMA, and then we headed off to dinner at a thai place. Overall it was a pretty epic day of fooding, drinking, and exploring. I am head over heels in love with this amazing city. Now I’m off to go finish up the last of my school work for this week, so I can enjoy tonight and tomorrow with my brother.

Lobster Joint: Date Night

Hey ya’ll! It has been a crazy weekend. My feet are still tired and I have about two more days to go with my brother, which I’m excited about because I have some fun things planned when I’m not in class or at work (this week I am going to be at PS 64 in the Bronx examining how school breakfasts and lunches are run, what the kids eat, and how much of each item choice is taken). Saturday was a pretty relaxed day because my brother and his friend ended up spending most the day at museums and going to Brooklyn. I was glad because unlike them I’m not on spring break, so I still had work to do. Saturday is meant for date night though, so I looked through my bookmark list on yelp and decided where I wanted to go. I have been craving lobster rolls so much lately, so I asked my wonderful date (in case he reads this – probably not though since I didn’t give him the URL) if he would be down for seafood. Luckily I am a really lucky girl and he said of course, so we decided to go to the Lobster Joint.

The lobster joint is a cute, really cozy kind of place to go eat at. It is located in the Lower East Side, which is turning into one of my favorite foodie neighborhoods. There are so many great food spots to hit up (this is where I am taking my brother and his friend on the Lindsay guided food tour – it is going to be epic). Anyways this restaurant was placed a few shops down from the iconical Katz Deli, so it is pretty easy to find. The inside is really adorable.

The entire menu is placed up on the walls, which I like because it is relatively easy to read. When you go into the restaurant, you order at the cash register and get a number. You can sit anywhere you would like to. The place was pretty packed at around 8 pm, so we ended up sitting at the bar, which I thought was nice because we could sit close to each other and actually talk privately. That is so hard to find in the city these days. The inside of the restaurant had a really cute nautical theme with lobsters and other sea themed items all over the place. The tables inside were high up picnic tables, which I thought made the Lobster Joint very kitschy. I was super excited for the food when we got there.

Look at that plate of greatness. I went into lobster heaven. We ended up both going for the New England style lobster roll, which was just your basic lobster roll with mayo and celery. They had a ton of other options available such as the BLT lobster roll, which had avocado, mayo, bacon (Ummm yes, please sign me up for that one next time). I actually thought the lobster rolls were really decently priced because this whole plate of food was 17$, and if you are a lobster roll fan you know that they can run you about 20-25$. This was a pretty good deal since you got a lobster roll, a pickle, a ton of french fries, and some coleslaw.

Look at that juicy, succulent lobster. It was definitely really good lobster. It wasn’t fishy at all, which is the worst when it is. It was mixed perfectly with the mayo and the celery. It is so horrible when there is too much mayo because who really just wants to eat a sandwich of pure mayo. No one. EVER. The bread was toasted to perfection. It wasn’t burnt, but it wasn’t soft. Overall this was definitely a pretty good lobster roll for my first official city roll. I will definitely be going on lobster roll adventures to test out all the other common places that there are to eat.

Fries on fries on fries. I love french fries. It is one of my favorite fat kid treats to myself. Of course it was my cheat day/weekend, so I allowed myself to choose the fries over a salad for the side. They were actually really good french fries. The best part was that I got to eat the rest of my date’s lobster roll because he was so full from eating a little before dinner. Win for me. I was a happy girl. After dinner we ended up going to a knish shop for my date to try some Jewish food, which was cute. He ended up getting a blueberry cheese one that was so to die for that today I had to go get some for myself. Overall it was a great night with good food and great company.

 

WIAW in the East Village and Beyond

Hey ya’ll! I have been gone. Don’t worry because I have some super valid reasons. The first weekend of February, actually January 31st, I had to go to the ER in the morning. Why you may ask? Well I had a ton of pain in my stomach. Being my typical self, I laid in bed from 5 am-8 am just crying and taking tums to see if that would make it better. I’m pretty stubborn, but I ended up calling my mom and she was like go to the ER. 12 hours later in the ER: Hey, you are getting your appendix out. Cool story bro, but can I just have my Chinese food? No. So pretty much I was dead for a week and a half after that. Then I got blessed with the wonderful news that I had strep throat. The gods are in my favor, duh. Then there was a possibility it was mono, but thank god that didn’t happen. So finally, this weekend was my first weekend to finally be out and about like a normal person. Where did I go? EAST VILLAGE! Thankfully since it is my favorite holiday, What I ate Wednesday, hosted by the lovely Jenn, I get to share all my foodie adventures I had.

I have found the happiest place on Earth. Also known as Pommes Frites. So the way this place works is you go in, order a small, medium, or large fry then pick your sauces. You can get one sauce along with your order, but if you want to pay extra you can get three sauces for like 2$ or something. The service is incredibly quick. The inside is incredibly small though, but I think it makes it feel like a more homey atmosphere. I ended up going with a simple choice this time, which was the pesto mayo. My roommate ended up getting the rosemary garlic mayo. The regular bag, which is the smallest size was MASSIVE. We ended up having tons of fries to take home, which ended up being our savior the next day from our hangover. We are looking forward to going back with my little brother (WHO IS COMING MARCH 7TH!!), so we can try a bunch of different crazy sauces like pomegranate teriyaki.IMG_3141

On our trek to go get margaritas, we ended up stopping at a super cute macaron place on St Marks Place. It was macaron parlour. Obviously before we went in, I had to yelp it to make sure it was acceptable for our delicate plates. It had 4 and a half stars, so you know I was going to go in. They had a ton of flavors from thai chili peanut to caramel apple cider. I think I died and went to heaven. I am a huge macaron connoisseur.

This is the caramel apple cider macaron. It is super cute with the pink and blue color. You definitely wouldn’t think it was that flavor based on the appearance. It was delicious though. As you bite into the macaron, a nice salty sweet caramel oozed out onto your tongue. The cookie part had hints of spiced apples in it. Together it actually tasted really close to cider, which I am a huge fan of (definitely one of my alcohol drinks of choice).

Saturday was probably one of my favorite holidays of the year: National Margarita day. Really any day that you can day drink and have delicious margaritas is a pretty stellar day to me. I ended up getting a medium coconut margarita frozen while my roommate got a regular small margarita on the rocks. The coconut was to die for. It actually had coconut mixed in, which was nice to suck up every once and a while in the straw. Let me just tell you about this place: Benny’s Burritos. It has low stars, but I’m not sure why because happy hour is the bomb. Smalls: 3$, Medium: 6$, Large: 9$. You can’t go wrong with that. The larges are massive too in huge soda cups. These are pretty strong too. I was feeling good after this first one.

Since I was drinking on a practically empty stomach (I had only managed to eat about 10-15 fries at Pommes Frites and we had been walking around for a while), I decided that I needed to eat some brunch. Thankfully it was about 2 pm, so breakfast was still acceptable. The food gods were really blessing me that day because there were my holy mecca of breakfast tacos on the menu. Although the restaurant called them egg wraps or something. STOP LYING TO YOURSELF. You need to advertise these bad boys because all the Texans in NYC will come flocking to your establishment and you will go to a 4 star place from 3.5 stars. These were legit. I got a bacon and egg taco. It came with two tacos and potatoes on the side for only about 4$. Now that is a deal to me. I sort of felt nostalgic and like I was at home while I chomped on my brekkie tacos and chugged my marg.

Since I was feeling pretty good already from my previous margarita, I thought why not order another one. This time I went with a small frozen raspberry margarita. If you love raspberries then this is definitely the choice for you. It was really good. I struggled to finish it though because I was pretty tipsy at this point. After our meal, we decided to trek back home for a nap before going out with our guy friends. The best was that we had to go the bathroom really bad during our walk, so we snuck into a bar, used their bathroom, and snuck out. #WINNING. Then we trekked through Chinatown in order to get my 10,000 steps. We ended up getting about 15,000 steps from the whole day. It was kind of exhausting especially because we were tipsy.

Cheesy Goodness

Hey ya’ll! Welcome back, Lindsay. I am totally getting adjusted to being back in this frozen arctic tundra. No joke. My original flight got cancelled because of Janus and now it has snowed twice since I’ve been back (today is only my fourth day back). Real life struggles right now. So not fun to go outside, but Carrianne and I had to have our typical Saturday adventures, so we braved the snow in order to get some good food and walk around. This led to us traveling to our dream neighborhood: Greenwich village (I dream of living here once I’m a dietitian being fab in the city). We ended up at heaven.

Hello to Murray’s Cheese Bar. We had planned to just get a little appetizer at this place and then go around to run some errands to end up at sushi for dinner. However we fell in love. At first we were confused because there is Murray’s Cheese Shop where you can buy the cheese you had at the restaurant or pick up some nice little food items. We ended up getting multiple items at the Cheese Bar and went to the Cheese shop after in order to get the good food that we had.

This was the Cheese menu. There was also a main menu on the other side with entrees, appetizers, desserts, and other items. We were there to get our cheesy goodness on. We thought the best thing to get in order to share was one of the cheese flights because it came with three cheeses and some toppings for those cheeses. Also in order to have a delicious cheese night, you need some great meat to go along with it. That means prosciutto. If you don’t like prosciutto, we probably can’t date. Sorry, not sorry.

Oh man the cheese flight from heaven. We ended up choosing the seasonal flight, which was such a good choice on our part. We had three different types of cheeses. One was really soft, one was a mid-ripened cheese, and the other was a hard cheese. The softest cheese was paired with a raisin jam topping. It was my favorite cheese. The cheese just melted in your mouth. It was served with crackers and bread, so it was nice to have a little crunch with the softness of the cheese. The cheese at the bottom was paired with butterscotch. I fell in love with the butterscotch. Who would have thought that the butterscotch would go so well with cheese. I usually like butterscotch with my icecream, but now I’ll be eating it with my cheese. The middle cheese was my least favorite. It was a hard cheese that was paired with carrots. I was not that much of a fan. The other two cheeses were amazing though.

Look at this huge pile of meat. I am typically not the biggest meat eater, but oh man. I would devour a huge pile of prosciutto anytime. It was cut incredibly thin and when paired with each cheese, it added a nice salty flavor to it. I made so many little sandwiches, it was the life. I liked that the meat was thin because it wasn’t overpowering the cheese, which was supposed to be the focus of the place. We ended up going to the Cheese Shop in order to buy some prosciutto to have later at the apartment. We got a different kind because damn this stuff is expensive, but oh so good.

Carrianne got a wine flight, which I was totally jealous about. I hadn’t eaten a lot though, so I would have gotten pretty drunk from just that amount of wine. She said that the white wine was really delicious, which was surprising because she isn’t a huge white wine fan. I will definitely be getting multiple glasses of wine when we go back because you can’t enjoy cheese without a good glass of wine.

We decided that we needed more cheese. So we looked through the a la carte menu items in order to decide what to get. We wanted a soft cheese since that other soft one we had on the flight was so delicious. We got a French Cheese. It was creamy, mushroomy, and amazing. I was so happy to see that the butterscotch was served along side this. I was in cheesy heaven. We ended up getting this cheese at the Cheese shop in order to continue the delicious food coma that we were in back at our apartment. Although that plan never happened haha. We were too full and got absorbed into a Gossip Girl marathon on netflix. Tonight will be the night that we enjoy our cheese though with some wine and a french baguette. I definitely recommend going here if you are ever in NYC, but if you can’t go to the restaurant just go get some cheese at the shop.

French Pastries Make Anything Better

Hey ya’ll! It is Monday. For the first time, I’m actually pretty excited that it is Monday. It is the last day of class for me and the best part is we are having speakers in some of my classes because they assumed that most people would go out of town, so class is optional (well except for my applied physiology class, but I have to turn in my review paper, so weeeee). I have a delicious treat for ya’ll this Monday. FRENCH PASTRIES. Seriously I think that French pastries make anything better. One of the best places in the city is Mille Feuille, which is located over near NYU. Man if only Columbia was over there. I would be probably 5000 lbs (haha jk because that would kill me). Anyways there is nothing like a delicious pastry and some hot chocolate on a cold day.

It is a really small shop, but it is packed with delicious treats. I was so cold, but the inside of the bakery was so warm that I think I was almost sweating. I made Carrianne sit outside with me, so I didn’t die to death inside while I nommed on my treats. It is a really cute shop though. The interior is decorated nicely, there is some stools to sit on, and it smells amazing. One of the coolest things about this little bakery is that they offer cooking classes for french macarons and croissants. Let me tell you, this is definitely the place you want to learn how to make either from (they have amazing macarons!).

Ummm look at these containers of french pastries. I think I died and went to heaven. I have actually been here before on a trip with my dad and little brother to New York. That is how I knew about this place beforehand since pastries isn’t the top thing I’m creeping on yelp for. It was really hard to choose what I wanted to get because I was torn between so many things. Look at those cronuts, they look so good. If we go back, I’m definitely going to be getting one of those because they had chocolate, raspberry, and almond. I would have gotten the chocolate or raspberry, but anyways on to what I ended up eating.

Look at this beautiful piece of croissant. It is pink, my favorite color. I think that is probably one of the main reasons that I gravitated towards this treat. The pink on the outside was beautiful. It was a raspberry flavored sugar that was sprinkled all over the top of the croissant. It was beautiful, but it was definitely a mess. When I was done eating this, I had pink stains all over my mouth. It was a pretty cute look for me.

Look at the flakiness of the croissant. When you bite into it, the crust just falls apart in your mouth. It was so buttery and delicious. It was definitely one of the best croissants I’ve had in a long time. Although nothing will ever compare to the chocolate croissants I have had in Europe (the funny thing is, the best chocolate croissant I had was in Germany). The sugar had soaked in a little bit in the pastry, so there was also a nice hint of raspberry in every bite.

Look at the inside of this croissant. It was an almond raspberry croissant, so the inside was filled with raspberry jam and almond paste. OMG. HEAVEN. When the two were mixed together, it was a sweet bite. The raspberry jam was perfect. It was made from fresh raspberries, so it didn’t have that artificial taste to it. I really hate when pastries just use pre-made fillings because having everything made from scratch makes it so much better. The almond paste was not too overwhelming, which was good because that helped it go along with the raspberry jam. I gobbled this thing up. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that goes here. Just be prepared to get messy.

This place has some of the best macarons of my life. These little things are packed with so much flavor, which is what makes a good macaron. I hate when they are cooked perfectly, but do not taste what the actual flavor is. These were coconut and pistachio. The pistachio is definitely a favorite. It tastes like freshly roasted pistachio nuts. If you closed your eyes, you would think that you are actually eating pistachios. The coconut was the same way. It tasted like fresh coconut bursting inside your mouth. Other macarons that I have had from this shop include salted caramel, passionfruit, lemon, chocolate, and raspberry. Every single one of those is delicious. The salted caramel and passionfruit are definitely at the top of the list though. This place even made Carrianne enjoy macarons, so you know that Mille Feuille is legit. Noms.

The Ultimate Holiday Bucket List

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I disappeared on you, but I’ve been crazy busy working on my research paper for applied physiology. I really am geeking out and love the topic that I’m writing about, which is how caffeine consumption affects endurance training versus resistance training. Maybe when I’m done I’ll have an educational post about it! That would be awesome, sharing my knowledge with the blogging world! Anyways I’m super excited about the holidays. Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Thanksgivukkah, Chrismukkah. Oh how I love the cheer in the air, but maybe not the chilly weather that is going along with it (25 degrees, but feels like 16, not cool weather, not cool). Since I love the holidays so much, I’ve decided I’m going to share an epic holiday bucket list with ya’ll!

1. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade (perks of living in NYC, but you can always watch it on TV too).

2. Host a Thanksgivukkah bash at my apartment.

3. Finally bake pumpkin challah (and use the leftovers for challah french toast).

4. Decorate the apartment for the winter holidays (I’m thinking dreidels, menorahs, a fake Christmas tree, mistletoe)

5. Bake my delicious holiday cookies, as many times as possible (Christmas and Hanukkah shapes – I need to go cookie cutter shopping too).

6. Watch all the classic Hanukkah movies: 8 Crazy Nights, The Hebrew Hammer, A Rugrat’s Hanukkah (such classics)

7. Enjoy all the Christmas classics too with my roommates!

8. Go on a classic holiday last minute gift shopping adventure with my little brother (probably get chased by a red car down the highway like always).

9. Buy my first Menorah, preferably with a cat theme (I’m growing up, no longer a bat mitzvah girl, but a grown up Jewish girl in the city).

10. Go the the Menorah lighting on 95th at least once during Hanukkah.

11. Test out the inventive sufganiyot at Zucker’s Bakery in East Village (Sweet potato with marshmallow filling, pumpkin with cranberry filling – noms).

12. Go to a Christmas Tree lighting event in the city with my roommates!

13. Go see the Nutcracker at David Koch Theater with my roommates (as you can tell we love roomie dates).

14. Have a gingerbread house making party at our apartment.

15. Decorate my first big Christmas tree when I go home for winter break (I’m so excited – we usually have our tiny fake white tree).

16. Buy a tacky Christmas or Hanukkah sweater.

17. Go to a bunch of holiday parties in the city and wear my tacky sweater with antlers on my head (this is definitely happening for sure on December 6th).

18. Kiss someone under a mistletoe (hmmm this might be hard to do, but I like a challenge).

19. Attend the Latke Festival in Brooklyn (maybe I should enter the competition – haha yeah right).

20. Bake a bunch of holiday treats to make gifts for all my friends.

21. Take a ton of photos.

22. Drive around Austin to find the best holiday lights in the city, and maybe trek to San Marcos to go to a drive through Christmas light show.

23. Get my hands on as many holiday goods as I can (peppermint hot chocolate, peppermint cake pops, gingerbread flavored treats, etc).

24. Walk down 5th ave and other streets looking at all the beautiful holiday window displays.

25. Have a classic Christmas adventure in New York by doing tons of holiday touristy things!

A return to Oatmeals (the greatest breakfast spot)

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I’ve been gone all weekend, but I decided I needed a weekend of rest. Plus I’ve been working hardcore on my review paper, which I think is going to be pretty awesome! Carrianne and I had a really chill weekend. We fought with time warner cable online, we did some light shopping, and we returned to our favorite breakfast spot. Ya’ll know breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so when we were in the West Village I had to go back to Oatmeals. Oh how I love you Oatmeals. A shop dedicated to my favorite breakfast item: oatmeal.

This was Carrianne’s bowl of heaven. She ended up getting the Canadian, which sounded really tasty. It had cinnamon roasted apples, sharp cheddar cheese, bacon, maple syrup, and sea salt. Seriously one of the best combinations ever. You can never go wrong when you get bacon. It adds that crunch along with a salty smoky flavor. The maple gives it a little sweetness to bring in the roasted apples. The cheese becomes melty when you mix it in with the hot creamy oatmeal. This was definitely a very inventive bowl of oatmeal. I would have never thought to put all of these things in together.

Carrianne isn’t a big fan of cooked apples, but she said that in this dish it was perfect. The apples were soft, but provided a nice texture along with all of the other ingredients in the bowl. Her favorite part was definitely the maple syrup. She thought it provided a nice taste to the array of flavors going on in the dish. She liked the sweet, yet savory idea behind it. She is more of a savory taste person while I am a sweet, so this was a nice balance in her opinion. I definitely will be getting this one sometime soon because it looked amazing and she gave it two thumbs up.

I ended up getting one of the Happy Endings, which means it was a sweet based oatmeal. This one was the S’mores. Ya’ll know I can’t resist s’mores. It had dark chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, graham crackers, and a chocolate syrup drizzle. Oh man this was a bowl of sweetness. I was in oatmeal heaven along with s’mores heaven. I think that is the best type of heaven to be in. The dark chocolate was so rich. When you swirled it into the oatmeal, it just became a creamy melted chocolate pond. The marshmallows were really cute. They reminded me of the ones that you find in a hot cocoa mix. They melted too in the oatmeal, which enhanced the creaminess of the oatmeal even more. I love the taste of marshmallows.

I really thought the graham crackers were interesting. I was expecting the classic large square chunks of graham crackers or I thought they were going to be crumbled over the oatmeal. I actually enjoyed these. They were really cute and provided a small amount, not overwhelming, of graham crackers. Graham crackers are my least favorite part about s’mores, so I was glad that they were really subtle. The chocolate drizzle was a nice touch too. It wasn’t drenched, which I appreciate. Overall it was another amazing oatmeal experience. I’m so sad that I don’t live closer because I would probably go here at least twice a week for breakfast. I think my wallet is happy though that I live far far away.

The best surprise was this oatmeal cookie. The guy working convinced Carrianne and I that we needed to try this. Not that we really needed much convincing because look at it. It is just calling out for you to take a bite out of it. At first I thought it might be a little hard, which I hate. I was wrong. The cookie was so soft. It was chewy and delicious. The icing was perfect on top too. It wasn’t too sweet and it wasn’t too thick. I could eat a ton of these things. Actually they are huge, so I probably could only eat one by itself. I would definitely recommend getting this if you ever go here! Such a good treat.
