The Greatest Meal of My Life

Hey ya’ll! It is my favorite day of the week: What I Ate Wednesday! I am so happy to be back in the country to participate in this. Luckily for ya’ll, I’ve been holding off to post for this special day, so that I could share the best meal I had on my trip with ya’ll and the rest of the foodie community! Thanks so much to Jenn for hosting this weekly event! Girl, you are a genius. Anyways now time for my meal. This was when we got to Sevilla. The day after we went to Toledo and went back to Madrid, we woke up the next morning super EARLY and hopped on a train to Cordoba where we would only spend a few hours. Thank god before we left I ate a Luna bar to tide me over.

Our first stop on the itinerary in Cordoba was to go to La Mezquita, which is a sort of catheral and mosque. It was amazing. I am a huge art history buff, I even took a course in my undergraduate studies. Near the end of the course we studied this famous architecture because it has a huge Moorish influence. The arches are probably one of the most notable features of this place since they go on and on forever. The columns themselves are also gorgeous. You can learn a lot about the time period of a building by looking at the crown of the column, which has the decoration part on top of the pillar. All of the carvings in the wall were very intricate too. It is amazing that such beauty like this can be created years and years ago when there was not that much technology and tools.

More arches and columns. Don’t worry I won’t torture ya’ll so much. I have about a million pictures of this one place. It was so beautiful that I just kept snapping away at everything. My eyes were a bit overwhelmed by everything, so I wanted to take enough pictures to be able to remember it later. There was a small amount of stained glass in the building, which was seriously breathtaking. I am a huge fan of stained glass (Jewish probz – or maybe art lover problems). I really just love art and architecture in general. If I could do something else in life (I wouldn’t because I love nutrition and health too much), but if I did it would have to do with art and architecture. I love it.

After La Mezquita, we headed off into these really small alley ways to find a synagogue. However the synagogue was closed for renovation, but luckily the Sephardic museum was open! I’m an Ashkenazi Jew, which means that I come from Eastern Europe. Sephardic Jews come from Spain, Morocco, etc etc. The museum was really cute though. It was three stories with each room being a different part of Jewish history in Spain. They had tons of old Spanish Jewish artifacts like a seder plate that was painted in the brightest colors. I liked that the Sephardic Jews were into very bright and vibrant things. It makes everything so much more beautiful. After this museum, our train was in an hour, so we didn’t have time to sit down and eat anything. We went back to the station and got on our train to Sevilla. Once in Sevilla we were starving, so we went to look for something that was open to eat. However it was siesta around this time, so we were getting nervous that nothing was open. Luckily we ended up at La Azotea, which had the best meal of our entire trip.

This may have been my favorite tapas plate of the entire meal. It was wontons with goat cheese and shrimp inside topped with a spicy aioli sauce and scallions. Ummmm yes. It was like an asian fusion with spanish food. The wontons were really hot, but the cheese just melted into your mouth as you bit into it. The shrimp was chopped very finely, so that the texture was not a bothersome at all. It was the perfect dish. I could have eaten about two or three plates of these and called it a meal.

This was a fish plate. It had a small filet of fish on top of a bed of greens, tomatoes, and this garlic sauce. It was also topped with parmesan flakes. This was a medio portion, which meant that it was half of what the ration is. It was cooked perfectly. The fish was extremely flaky and fresh. The tomatoes were so good too. When you mixed everything up with the sauce, it was the perfect bite. There were some other good looking fish plates that went by us as we sat waiting for our food. We wanted to eat everything.

This looks extremely weird, and a little bit like sushi. However it is just some brown rice and meat stuffed into a seaweed wrap and topped with either an egg or caramelized onions. When I first saw this dish on the table, I was a bit worried. It looks a little sketchy, however it is an explosion of deliciousness when you shove it in your mouth. You expect it to be a bit bitter, but instead it is extremely sweet in a savory sort of way. I would have definitely ordered this again.

Croquettes! We obviously couldn’t have gone one meal without eating at least one of our favorite traditional Spanish foods. These were AMAZING. It was like a sweet duck sauce underneath the croquettes, which were just simply filled with ham and cheese. They were fried super crispy too, which gave the outside a nice crunch as you got into the soft inside. These were definitely one of the best croquettes I had on the trip.

I believe that if you are having the best meal of your life, you definitely need to order dessert. Since this restaurant was so amazing, it was obvious that all of the desserts were going to be equally amazing. It was really hard to pick, but in the end we ended up choosing a chocolate orange souffle. It was mind blowing. When we broke it open, chocolate ganache spilled out of the cake. We ate it up in about five minutes. They must have thought we were American pigs, but oh well. It was good. Definitely the best meal of the trip. I wish we could have gone back at least one more time to try other things on the menu since there were so many tempting options.

Instead of having dinner like a normal person, we decided to head over and eat some helado (ice cream) for dinner. Such a good option in my opinion. We went to Rayas, which is a very popular heladeria in Sevilla. It was definitely worth the trek (later on we found out that there was one literally a foot from our hotel lol). My brother ended up getting strawberry cheesecake and dulce de leche. The strawberry cheesecake was definitely my favorite of the two. It was so creamy and rich.

I decided to go pretty simple and just get coconut. It was delicious. There were small flakes of coconut within the ice cream. I love fruit flavors of ice cream. I wish we would have gone back to get more because I would have gotten lemon or mango. You can’t go wrong with something simple. If I had my way, I probably would have just snuck behind the counter and sampled every single flavor. Yeah, I like ice cream. Foreign icecream is just so much better in comparison to American. I could live off gelato in Italy, but that is a whole different story. Back to Spain!

After we got our ice cream, we ate it and walked around Sevilla. We ended up at this awesome castle/church thing. I’m not really sure what it was, but it was gigantic. It looks cool at night. We walked through the Juderia (Jewish neighborhood) and even ended up attending some neighborhood party. Actually we think it was some political rally, but it felt like a neighborhood party to me. It was super awkward in my opinion and I wanted to leave. Eventually we ended up back at the hotel and went to rest for the next day ahead of us.

I hope everyone had a good WIAW! We are halfway through the week. I’m not sure why I count down the week anymore since I pretty much do nothing besides coach volleyball. It is just a habit I guess or I’m just super excited for the Maccabi games and graduate school. Who knows!

For the Love of Churro

Hey ya’ll! I’m back for day 2 of my trip to Spain. The second day, we were still in Madrid. Since we got so much sleep the night before, we decided to start the day early in Madrid. I was in the mood for breakfast (something that I did not eat that much on the trip, which made me very sad since that is my favorite meal of the day). We ended up going for a very unconventional breakfast: Churros con chocolate. We wondered off into the streets of Madrid to San Gines, a very popular churreria in Madrid.

Hello to these crispy cakes of goodness. When a lot of people think about churros, they think of covered in cinnamon sugar. However churros in Spain are pretty plain. Just fried sticks of heaven. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfection. You could either order yours with a cup of hot chocolate or a cup of coffee. My brother and I both got ours served with hot chocolate. This was a huge plate of churros. Somehow we managed to eat it all, but it definitely kept us full for hours and hours.

When we ordered hot chocolate, I was thinking it was going to be a hot cup of liquidy chocolate silk. However this was not the case. The hot chocolate actually is very thick. It seems just like a cup of melted chocolate, which it probably was. I should have acquired more information on it, so I could have shared the wonders of this delicious cup with ya’ll. It was perfect to go with the churros though because with each dunk of churro in the cup, the churro would be coated perfectly and it wouldn’t drip that much. Three cheers for no messes! After we finished up our churros and took a minute to let our stomachs rest, we set off on our journey to the Prado Museum.

This is the outside of the Prado. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside, which made me very sad. We ended up getting there about 15 minutes early, which was good since we were able to get to the front of the line. If you are ever in Madrid, this is a must do. Get there early because by the time it reaches 10 am when the museum opens, there is a huge line wrapped around the museum and you will have to wait a while in the heat. We had this hilarious tour guide in the museum. She was making us crack up laughing while still educating us on all the wonderful paintings in the museum. We saw tons of El Greco, Vasquez, and Goya. We spent a lot of time at the museum, but it was totally worth it.

Next we walked all the way to Retiro park. It was so gorgeous. There were tons of different types of plants. My favorite were the trees that were shaped like broccoli. They were quite funny to look at. The people that cut them did a very good job at shaping the plants. This park was huge. It felt like we could walk forever and still discover new areas of the park. We walked to the water, which was so nice. People were rowing boats on the water, which looked like a lot of fun. We then trekked further through the park to find a beautiful structure that awaited us!

Hello to the Cristal Palace. It was so hot inside haha but it was so beautiful. They had these circles hanging from the ceiling in different colors. It was gorgeous. There were also matching circles spread throughout the floor. It was a really cool thing to find in the middle of a huge park. I definitely recommend for anyone in Madrid to spend some time in the park. Maybe have a picnic or layout by the water.

For lunch, which was around about 3 pm, we went to this lovely place called Malaspina. This is a MUST. The place was so amazing. Probably the best meal we had in Madrid! This was a tortilla espanola. It was sooooo cheesy in the middle. I love anything that has melty cheese in the middle. The egg and potato part of the tortilla was delicious too. It was served on a perfectly toasted piece of bread. This was definitely the best tortilla espanola we had on the whole trip.

This may be the best Spanish tapa dish ever. Patatas bravas. They are small pieces of potato topped with a delicious spicy sauce. After this time of having them, we ate these suckers everywhere we could find them. These were definitely one of the best things I discovered on the trip to Spain. I am definitely going to have to recreate these and make a healthy version. I miss them so much. It was like a staple of my diet while I was there. The sauce was the perfect amount of spicy. Not enough to burn your mouth, but just enough to give you that little kick in your mouth. The potatoes were also crispy just like I like them. They reminded me of hashbrowns.

Just your average Iberian ham on top of some toast. This was delicious. Such a simple dish, but so tasty. I love how thin the ham is. It is perfect. My brother gobbled this plate up. He loved the Iberian ham more than anything on the trip, well besides the patatas bravas.

This just looks like heaven on a plate. You can’t go wrong with melty cheese on the top of anything. This was a different kind of ham with cheese on top of toast. This may have been my favorite dish of the meal besides the potatoes. It was so rich and creamy from the cheese. The cheese provided a sweet flavor while the ham added a small amount of saltiness. Then the bread added a nice crunch to the dish. It was perfect.

Of course we had to have a plate of calamari. This one was fried perfectly. We topped it off with some lemon juice and started devouring away. I love tapas because this was a small amount of calamari. If it was a large plate, I’m not sure if I would be able to consume it all with my brother. We really enjoyed this calamari though. I like it when it is in the rings. Although, as seen from my post yesterday, I obviously don’t have a problem eating pieces that look like baby squids.

After we took a very long siesta (which is much needed every day), we ended up going to House Sorolla. It was the house of the famous Spanish artist, Sorolla. It was so beautiful outside. There was a huge garden in front of the house. We then went inside to look at the gallery. It was a pretty small gallery inside, but the colors of the paintings were very gorgeous. It was a nice museum. The weather was also perfect, so they had the windows open inside the house. It was definitely an interesting way to view art.

This was the only day that we ate three meals. I know, we were very unhealthy the entire trip. Not eating a lot everyday, but walking all over the place. This meal was also super delicious. It was more of a seafood place, which we had been craving. My family loves seafood, so anytime we can get fresh fish we are there. This dish was shrimp with garlic and some other kinds of ingredients in a hot bowl. It was super delicious.

This may be the best cheese plate I have ever had. It was a mix of goat cheese and brie. Brie is my favorite cheese. My brother is obsessed with cheese and bread, so that is why we ordered this dish in the first place. It was served with a bowl of caramelized onions! I told ya’ll that you would be seeing those suckers again on my blog. Who knew that it would be so soon! I liked mixing both cheese on a piece of toast and topping it with caramelized onions. It was delicious.

These were tigres, which were fried mussels. They were so delicious. This was amazing. How can you go wrong with something fried? The inside was creamy and delicious. While the top was fried crispy. We only had these one other time on the trip, which made me very sad. I love mussels. However they were so delicious and I’m glad I have a picture to remember them. My dad loves tigres so much, he always goes on and on about how the tigres in Salamanca are sooooo amazing (I think we heard that story about 5 million times hahaha).

This is a beautiful looking plate. Underneath the delicious crispy Iberian ham, there is sauteed mushrooms. Two of my favorite things on one plate. These mushrooms weren’t as great as the place we had the night before, but it was a different yet still delicious flavor. I really enjoyed the ham on top. It added a salty flavor to the mushrooms.

Finally we had paella. I love paella. It is so amazing Filled with all kinds of seafood. My favorite may have been the calamari that was hidden beneath the rice. I was in love with this dish. Unfortunately this was the only paella we had on the entire trip. I was sad, but we were eating so much good food that I didn’t seem to really notice until the end of the trip. My tummy was so happy after this meal. We ate soo late too. We had dinner at like 1030 pm! We finished at around 11 something. It was quite weird, but so typical for Spain. People are out strolling at 11 pm with their children in strollers. I found this to be very interesting. Anyways day 2 was such a success. We were having so much fun that I couldn’t wait to explore more of Spain!

Barley Swine (Take 2)

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I’ve been gone for a long time. I’ve been a busy bee. Traveling around the US, applying to graduate schools, and of course the busy work of being a senior in the undergraduate nutrition program while working on a review paper. What have I been up to food-wise? A LOT! So I’m going to bombard ya’ll with a crazy amount of posts about restaurants, recipes, and places I’ve eaten at on my travels. The other night my dad, my younger brother, and I went to the Barley Swine in Austin. We love this place so much because of the exquisite small plates that are offered there.

DSC02741This is grilled broccoli, fermented chili, and crushed duck egg. The crushed duck egg was creamy and smooth with a hint of garlic that melted perfectly in the mouth. The broccoli was crispy and was a nice combination with the fermented chili that was scattered around the plate. This was definitely one of my favorite dishes because of the garlic chips in the dish added a nice hint of flavor the already perfect dish.

DSC02742This was the second appetizer dish. One of the good thing about all the appetizer plates is that they are all vegetable based. On this plate were hay roasted beets, mole, crispy rice, and goat cheese. It was delicious. I’m not a big beet eater, but this definitely has changed my mind. The beets were soft, which was great when you added in the crispy rice since it gave it a nice crunch. The variety of flavors in the dish were amazing. I definitely will go for more beet dishes after this.

DSC02743This thing looks like a pile of goop.However it is an amazing pile of goop. Underneath the garlic chips there were bay scallops, cauliflower, masa, raisins, and chipotle. The chipotle provided a sweet smokey flavor to the dish. It was amazing. The scallops were tiny, which was nice because I hate when there are only one to three large scallops. The cauliflower was creamed into the sauce, so it wasn’t overwhelming.

DSC02744Hello to one of the greatest dishes of the night. This was goat, walnut, kohlrabi, fenugreek, wild rice, and green garlic. The goat was cooked to be extremely tender, so when you bit into the meat it fell apart in your mouth. That is my kind of meat. The sauce that went along with it was so creamy, and added a sweetness to the tender cooked meat.

DSC02745I’m still not sure what to think about this dish. It is a soft poached egg, celery, dill, popcorn, and fermented goats milk. Yes, I did say popcorn? I am not sure the popcorn was so great on the plate, but when you had a bite of the egg with the goats milk it was extremely delicious. The foam was one of the interesting parts about the dish. I was sort of ambivalent about the dish.

DSC02746This dish was perfection. This was a smoked steel head trout, fennel, pine, and shiitake mushrooms. This was like a high end and creative version of lox. It was like a Jewish girl’s heaven. All I needed was a fancy bagel to go along with this dish and it would have been like Saturday Kiddush bruncheon after services. This was one of the specials they had on the board, so if you go within the week definitely get this dish.

DSC02748This looks a little creepy, but I promise it is good. It is lamb sausage, mint, sunchoke, and bacon broth. BACON BROTH?!? Yes, one of the greatest things that has ever existed on the planet. I wish you could order bacon broth everywhere you went because it is just that amazing. The lamb sausage had a wide variety of flavors with a bit of a kick. It was spicy, but the perfect amount so it didn’t overwhelm you.

DSC02749I could eat ten of these plates because it was just that awesome. It had bacon, brussel sprouts, hot sauce, hay butter, and hoe cakes. I love the hoe cakes at Barley Swine. They are delicious. The bacon was thick square pieces that went along nicely with the crunch of the roasted brussel sprouts. The hot sauce on the plate had a nice addition. It was more of a sweet hot sauce, so it wasn’t too overwhelming to the palate.

DSC02750What is this? It is pig three ways. It is crispy trotter, pig’s face, and loin. The rest of the goods on the plate are pinto beans and sauerkraut. The crispy trotter was stuffed with foie gras and some cheese. That may have been my favorite because you definitely can’t go wrong with anything that is fried. However the pig face is also extremely delicious. They cook the face of the pig and once the meat is extremely tender, the chef cuts out the softest pieces to serve on the plate. The loin was delicious, but the others were my favorite.

DSC02751This dish was the best of the night. The picture is a little dark because the restaurant started to change the mood for an upcoming party at 7:30. This was duck, foie gras, carrot, lavendar, farro, and hibiscus. The duck was crispy on the outside and extremely tender on the inside. It was the perfect cooked duck. The foie gras was heaven. It was so soft and melted in your mouth as you combined it with the farro and cooked carrots. I wish I could have eaten this dish over and over again.

DSC02752Time for dessert. Always one of my favorite parts of the meal. This was a meyer lemon tart, basil, quinoa granola, and rooibos tea sorbet. The lemon was sour and sweet at the same time providing for a delicious treat.

DSC02753Chocolate heaven. I have a huge weakness for chocolate, so as soon as this dessert came out I had my spoon ready to dig in. My family laughed because they discovered my biggest weakness (they kept getting annoyed because I would slap their hands, so that I could take a photo of each plate). This was a milk chocolate ganache topped with sweet potato marshmallows, whiskey, and orange. I was in heaven. There was also chocolate meringue chips that topped the dessert. It was amazing. I had died and gone to a chocolate bliss world.

If you are ever in Austin, please please go to this restaurant. You should order 3-4 small plates per person in your group. We ordered everything, but then again we like to eat a lot of food to sample everything a place has to offer.

WIAW (What My Roommate Makes Me)

Hey ya’ll! It is Wednesday. Hurray. For me, that means only class today and tomorrow. However I have the dreadful GRE at 5:30 pm tomorrow evening. Bum bum bum. I know it sucks. The things I do to achieve my dreams. On a happier and much lighter note, it is What I Ate Wednesday. YES. Thank you Jenn for giving this special day to all of us food and healthy living bloggers. I love it. For today’s WIAW post I thought I would throw an extra special twist: What my roommate makes me. I love my roommate, she is all about healthy living, so she makes some delicious food for us to enjoy.

DSC02736This past week she made enchiladas. Oh god were they good. She used corn tortillas and real Mexican cheese (although we aren’t sure how legit the cheese is because our stomachs hurt later). The sauce was the bomb though. She made it with peppers and other delicious goodness.

This is the whole plate of delicious heaven. She served the enchiladas with chopped lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Then there was a side of brown rice with tomatoes, peppers, and chiles. The rice was amazing. It was creamy, smooth, and filled with a bit of spice. I kept going back for more. Then we had some organic refried black beans on the side. I have a weakness for refried beans, soooo good.

DSC02739This is so blurry. Maybe because I was tipsy? Blame it on the alcohol, blame it on the vodka, blame it on the henney. No, but actually really. My contribution to the dinner was the margaritas. This was round two. The first ones we had were lime margaritas and these were strawberry. We like to celebrate our Thursday nights in style, even if we are just sitting at home the two of us. We are cool like that, I know you are all jealous.

DSCN0155What is this? Vegetarian heaven on a plate. It was ezekial bread topped with relish, mayonaisse, and vegetarian sloppy joe. I’ve never had a vegetarian sloppy joe, so this was something new for me. It was amazing. Maybe even better than one with actual meat it in. She served corn on the side. I was a big fan. I haven’t had corn in a while.

DSC02497She makes the best salads. No joke. This one was spinach leaves, pine nuts, goat cheese, blueberries and topped with a blueberry dressing. Oh man, this was good. I love a nice refreshing salad, so whenever she pops one of these bad boys up I’m pretty excited.

DSC02732This is Ivy, the crazy kitten. She had managed to get into the empty alcohol bag. Maybe she wanted to booze too? Too bad you are a kitten. Underage problems. She just has a love for bags. We think she looks like a gremlin. She pops out of nowhere and jumps on everything. She is like a little ball of energy.

Welcome to Seattle

Hey ya’ll! One of my favorite things to do is travel, so for winterbreak I ended up going to Seattle and Vancouver. I fell in love with both. Seriously, I want to move to Canada to go to graduate school. For the next few days, I will recap my amazing trip and the foodie adventures I had in these wonderful places.

When my brother and I landed in Seattle, it was around 9 pm. We were starving. We still had to get our suitcases, ride the link light train, and check in to our hotel. I did not realize I was going to San Francisco! Kidding, but just a little. There were hills like the ones in SF, and I had to drag my suitcase and myself up the hill, not pleasant. We made it, checked in, and my brother got on yelp. We decided to walk down a bajillion hills in order to get some sushi. We ended up going to Nijo Sushi.

One of the greatest things abut this place was that they had happy hour until 12 am, which we were just in luck since we didn’t get there until about 10:30 pm. This was one of the dishes we got off the happy hour menu. They were yam fries, which were tossed with wasabi oil and kosher salt (yay kosher) and were served with a wasabi aioli. Oh god was that aoili sauce amazing. The creaminess of the sauce mixed with the crispy sweetness of the yam fries was pure perfection. I could just have eaten tons of this dish.

DSCN0023The second happy hour item we ordered was the dancing shrimp. It was flash fried rock shrimp tossed lightly with wasabi dressing. Once again Nijo hits us with an amazing creamy and crunchy blend of flavors. This probably was my favorite dish of the night. I am a sucker for good fried shrimp. I blame it on the cajun in me!

DSCN0017I’m about to serve you up some sweet sushi porn. My brother and I got three rolls because my dad has just messaged us saying that he was walking down to the restaurant. We ordered the frank and beans, which had tempura shrimp with cucumber topped with spicy tuna and tobiko. THAT ROLL WAS AMAZING. I’m not even sure how to describe it, but it was so fresh and creamy. I love rolls that have any type of creaminess. Another roll was the Crunch roll, which had spicy scallops, enoki mushrooms, cucumber, tobiko, and kalware. This roll was interesting. Not sure if I liked it, but it wasn’t bad. The third roll was the Cheeze roll. It was spicy tuna, cream cheese, cucumber, and avocado topped with panko breaded and fried eel. This roll was delicious too. Now it is time for some sushi porn!

DSCN0027This beauty was the Chili Cha Cha roll. It was filled with soft shell crab, cucumber, and jalapeno topped with avocado and tobiko. It was pretty delicious. It had a nice kick to it too with the jalapenos, but it wasn’t so spicy that I couldn’t handle it.

DSCN0026This is the volcano roll. If you don’t like to have your mouth burning and on fire, run the other way. This thing made me chug about 5 glasses of water in about 5 minutes. It was crazy. It had cucumber, jalapeno, lemon slice, spicy scallop, eel sauce, and tenkasu and red tobiko. It was good, but scary spicy. Definitely couldn’t really handle it. I’m a whimp.

This place was pretty good, especially since they had a happy hour till 12 am. It was the perfect start to our amazing trip on the west coast.

Sushi Adventure

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I’ve been gone so long. First I lost my camera, then I lost my camera charger, and now I have a new camera, which I bought myself for Hanukkah. I’m glad to be back though. I’ve been on tons of food adventures that I’ve been wanting to share with you. First up is my trip to Roll On Sushi Diner in Austin. It is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in Austin. The diner makes delicious rolls that are creative.

DSC02696This roll was called the Fruity Vegan. It was topped in a mango salsa which was to die for. The roll was super fresh, and filled with tons of fruit and vegetables. I like switching it up sometimes, and eating vegetarian rolls instead of meat.

DSC02697This was the sticky ball. Oh my god this was so amazing. It was a fried ball of rice that is covered in aoili and other various sauces. It was rolled in spices on the outside. It was a gooey ball of various Asian flavors. It is also only 3$ at Happy Hour, so if you live in Austin this is one of the best happy hours I have seen. They have tons of rolls for super cheap, SAKE BOMBS, and other delicious goodies for half the price.

DSC02698This was the Lo-Burn roll. It had shrimp tempura, unagi, and jalapenos tempura fried in the inside of the roll. The outside was also fried in tempura batter, and it was topped with spicy aioli, unagi sauce, and scallions. This definitely was probably my favorite roll of the night. It wasn’t too spicy since the jalapenos were fried in tempura, so it calmed down the heat a bit. The combination of the two sauces was pure perfection. It gave this sweet yet spicy flavor to the crunch of the tempura fried roll.

DSC02699This was the Machete Roll. It had a spicy salmon krab cake, jalapenos, avocado, chili confit garlic, it was tempura fried, and topped with chipotle aoili, guacamole, and pico de gallo. To be honest, I was not really a fan of this roll. I think Roll On was smart creating a Mexican style roll, but I still think they need to work on the flavors. It was just alright, and trust me that took a lot to admit because Roll On Sushi is one of my favorite places to eat in Austin for sushi (that I can afford because otherwise I’d be down for Uchi or Uchiko).

DSC02700The dynamite. Pretty much just looking at it you are already in heaven. This is my brother’s favorite roll at Roll On. I agree that it is amazing, but I can’t pick a favorite. It is an egg cream cheese topping that is seriously mind blowing or like dynamite.

DSC02701This is definitely one of my top five rolls at Roll On. It is the Respect My Asparaguh roll (don’t you just love the names – they are pretty cute and creative). The roll has sun dried tomatoes, asparagus, goat cheese, and it is topped with some candied walnuts and balsamic dressing.

DSC02703We have recently discovered that Roll On does these things called bowls. They are based on a sushi roll in the menu, but are the components broken up into larger pieces and placed in a bowl. We got the California bowl, which had soft shell crab, cucumbers, avocado, and rice with this sweet sauce. It was delicious. Next time I’m there for lunch or something, I will definitely get a bowl for my meal.

DSC02702This was the Dream Roll, which definitely lives up to its name. It was extremely delicious and the flavors were like a good dream in my mouth. It has shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cream cheese, and cucumber layered with krab, yellowtail, salmon, and avocado. The roll was topped with spicy aoili, unagi sauce, scallions, and roll on crunch. AMAZING. I swear that anything with crunch on it is great in the sushi world. This is a must get on your trip to roll on.

I love roll on because the rolls are fresh, fun, and creative. Recently, they have created a Roll On Members Club, which is free to sign up for. Every time you dine there or order take out, the money spent will be added up as points on your cards. So each time you reach a certain amount of points, you receive rewards. So far just for signing up I get 5$ off my next meal there, which is pretty much a roll or appetizer. I’m stoked. I may even go this weekend!

Bahhston Day 2

Hey ya’ll! Hope everyone has been having a great Friday. Mine has been pretty relaxing. I’ve been reading books, watching some movies, and I’m going out with my younger brother tonight to the UT volleyball game and to dinner (which has yet to be determined). Anyways, let me get back to my trip to Boston.

Friday morning I woke up, and decided to go on a little adventure while Carrianne was at work doing her thing at the Children’s Hospital. I wondered over to Newbury street, which has some of the greatest shopping and has a cute Boston feel to it with the brick buildings alongside both sides of the street.

As I was walking around looking at the shops, I stumbled upon Georgetown Cupcakes. The shop has been made famous by the TV show on TLC following the two sisters that own the company. My stomach was growling, and I wanted to see if the hype about the cupcakes was actually true.

They had tons of cupcakes on display and for sale inside the store. I got to see all this once I waited in line OUTSIDE for about 10 minutes. Apparently the shop was too crowded for people to go in, but really there were just a bunch of annoying girls standing in the way. When I finally got in, I had a hard time choosing what to eat, but I decided to have a gluten free cupcake since I wanted to be nice on my stomach. It was a gluten free lava fudge cupcake (picture will come later when I do a Boston Cupcake review post), and let me tell you it was actually pretty delicious. I went on my merry way with my cupcake and cup of fat free milk.

I was trying to hold off on buying anything because I had promised Carrianne that we would go shopping over the weekend since we both had come into some money. However, I stepped in the Steve Madden store and couldn’t resist (I have a problem with SM because their shoes are amazing). I ended up having to order a pair of boots to be shipped because they had run out of 10. If these shoes go on sale, I’m definitely going to get the tan ones too. They are that fabulous.

After a few more hours of strolling around Boston, Carrianne had texted me that she was walking home from work and wanted to meet at Dunkin Donuts. However, I was going at tortoise pace, so I just met her back at the apartment. Then it was time for dinner.

We went to Fish Market. It is seriously probably one of the best sushi places in Boston. It was quite a trek from Carrianne’s, and I wore uncomfortable shoes. Bad decision. I guess I forgot that we don’t live down the street anymore (oh how I miss that). We were supposed to meet one of our old roommates there, but she ended up not being able to come. Her loss because the food was AMAZING.

For an appetizer, I had Agi Dashi Tofu. It is a fried tofu served in a light shoyu broth with scallions. Oh man. This was a great way to start off the meal. The tofu was perfectly fried, and it was silken tofu so it fell apart when you bit into it. The broth was light, and the dish wasn’t filling at all, so I had room for a ton of sushi rolls.

For my first round, I had a Shiitake Mushroom Tempura Maki roll. There were only 4 pieces, which I was sad about, but the fried mushrooms in the roll were so good that I forgot about how small it was. The brown thing on the right is a fried tofu wrapper and the one of the top left is sweet egg omelet. My mind was blown with the tofu wrapper sushi. I didn’t know what to expect, but I thought I would try it since it is vegetarian friendly. Oh god I could have probably eaten like ten more of those, but I didn’t have time to stay at the restaurant all night.

My last roll was the Salmon Skin roll. It is salmon skin, bonito flakes, cream cheese, and cucumber. This is one of my favorite rolls at Fish Market because it tastes like bacon. Now that I don’t eat meat, except fish, this is the closest thing I will get to eating actual meat. Oh man. The crispiness of the salmon skin meshes perfectly with the smooth texture of the cream cheese. Definitely order this if you ever go here!

After dinner, we had to hurry back to the apartment because I needed to change because I was going out to a concert. My friend, David, had texted me asking me if I wanted to go with him and a few of his friends to some electronic show, so I decided why not. The artist we were going to see was Viceroy, so I put on my best raging outfit: high wasted white shorts, a see through lace black top, and a black bandeau.

This is David, and this photo is actually pretty old. The only photo I took of us this weekend is for another post much later on. He is pretty great. Anyways I met him and his friends at his old frat house over in Cambridge (Yeah, he went to MIT), and we headed over to the concert. One of the other groups was still performing when we got there, so we waited until the real party started. After the concert, we went back to his place and played Mario Kart for a while. Apparently I now suck at Mario Kart. Oh well, it was still really fun and I did get 1st once. Go me.
