WIAW: Westsville in NYC

Hey ya’ll! It is that awesome time of the week again, What I Ate Wednesday, hosted by the lovely Jenn. This week I have something special. My best friend and I met up with another friend of ours from Texas who also goes to Teacher’s College at Columbia. What a small world? We were in a Jewish youth group, BBYO, as youth, so it was a nice catch up, since the other girl was a few years older than us. We ended up going to this super cute place over in Chelsea called Westville. Now let me get on to the food.

This place is overflowing with cuteness. Look at the menu. It made me feel like I was at school because it was handwritten on lined paper. I thought it brought a lot of fun to the restaurant and gave it a warm, welcoming environment. This was just one menu too. They had a regular menu underneath it. There was so many food options that it was really hard to decide. This menu was so cute though that I obviously had to get the market sides.

Here is my beautiful plate of market sides. I feel like a bunny rabbit when I look at this plate. It is full of vegetables and tofu. It is also a really colorful plate, which is super important in having a healthy and balanced diet. It keeps you wanting to eat the healthy food by having it bright and colorful. You need variety in your diet in order to stick with choosing healthy choices.

For one of my sides I got the Asian Style Bok Choy. It was just your regular bok choy that had been sauteed in some oil and topped with peanuts and spicy sauce. It was delicious. I love the way sauteed bok choy tastes. It gets so tender, which is a nice alternative to having to really crunch and chew on something. The sauce was really nice too. It wasn’t overly spicy, which I needed since I’ve been eating so much bibimbap with spicy red paste. I have cleared my sinuses way too much this week. I feel like a new person. Anways, Bok Choy. It was simple, but sometimes you need that in your life.

This was the soy glazed tofu. I actually like how they presented this part of the dish. I was expecting to have a ton of small chopped up pieces of tofu, but then I was surprised when I saw two long pieces of pan-seared tofu on the plate. It had a light glaze of the soy, which was good because you do not want that overly salty taste to tofu. It was really crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. This was definitely one of the better cooked tofu dishes I have had at a restaurant (obviously nothing can replace my sesame tofu in Austin, but this was really good). This was my protein on the plate to go along with all the fiber that I was consuming. You always need to balance it out.

This was definitely the star of the plate. Roasted beets with walnuts. I think I was in heaven. I could have eaten an entire plate of this. I forgot how much I loved beets. They are so soft and tender. When you stick them in your mouth, they just melt on your tongue. The walnuts gave a nice crunch to it and added a salty flavor to the sweetness of the beets. I gobbled these up in an instant. You could have gotten them with goat cheese, but I insisted on the walnuts because of the Vitamin E that they contain and they are a healthy source of fat. I will definitely be ordering this market side when I go back to Westville. I could not stop raving about this when I got home and talked to Carrianne. I was like the beets, OMG, so good. Who says that? I know my childhood self would not have. I’m adult Lindsay now who loves all her vegetables (even though when I was little, I actually had a pretty great palate for vegetables).

Brussel sprouts? Man ya’ll must think I have gone crazy going after all the weird vegetables for dinner. To be completely honest, I was trying to be super healthy anyways because I am currently on prednisone for my arthritis, so I am intense with not consuming any bad things. For those of you that don’t know, prednisone makes you gain weight because it increases your appetite. Luckily every time that I take prednisone, I have never gained weight, but actually lost weight. As long as I stick to my good habits, I know I’m good. Anyways, FOOOOOD. Brussel sprouts. So delicious. What? Lindsay is liking all these vegetables that are usually disgusting. Ummm what? They are so good. Yes, now I’m having conversations with myself because I’m cool like that. These brussel sprouts came with a honey dijon sauce that was to die for. They were perfectly roasted and the sauce soaked into the leaves. It was great. I was so full after my meal because of all the fiber. Definitely a win win! Also all of that food was only 15$. What a steal!

Isa and our friend Rachel ended up splitting a plate of sides and a salad. They ordered the pesto mash potatoes, which may have been one of the best things I have ever had. Pesto and mash potatoes. What a genius combination. They were so silky and soft. The pesto was mixed perfectly in the mash. They let me have a bite and I was so thankful. They also ended up getting sesame snow peas, polenta, and squash with quinoa. I think they were sad because they didn’t order the french fries (as was I because when I saw a girl across from us with them I was insanely jealous). They enjoyed the mash potatoes and snow peas, but the other two dishes left a little confusion.

Pardon me for having a super blurry picture. This is the salad that they ended up splitting. It had arugula, pair, shredded mozarella, and a lemon oil sauce. It looked so good. It was also huge. They were like woah, thank god we are splitting this. I definitely would get a salad too next time to split with someone. That was the best way to go about things. Splitting a salad and market sides, that way you got to taste a whole bunch of choices. I can’t wait to go back here another time. Definitely a really great spot to go on a date. It was cute and cozy inside. Our friend, Rachel, said that the drinks were really good too and that the vegetarian burger was to die for. I will obviously be hitting it up for all of the reasons above. It was a nice night.

I hope ya’ll have a great Wednesday. Mine is pretty eventful. I am getting all my lab testing done in applied physiology lab. That means I have to perform blood pressure, heart rate, skinfold, medical history, physical assessment, and breathing tests on a subject and get graded on it. So far I have gotten a 100 on my two other tests, so I think I am pretty good to go. I’ll leave you with this little gem of a minion. When Isa and I were walking to Westville, we saw this cute little guy in the window of a cake shop. I wanted to go in so bad, but I just wrote down the name, so I could go back when I’m off prednisone and it is a Saturday! Have an awesome day!

WIAW at Grub Street

Hey ya’ll! It is that amazing time of the week again. What I Ate Wednesday, thanks to Jenn. I have another awesome share for my favorite day. I swear I go to so many food festivals. Here in the city, there probably is a food fest about every weekend, so when I saw that the Grub Street Food Festival was going on this past Sunday, I obviously had to go. I dragged my roommates and they happily trekked to the Lower East Side with me. Lets get to the good part: the food.

When we first got there, we decided to walk around the entire event to see all the food options. The set up was pretty great. It was at a park on a track, so they set up the booths all around the track with a few in the middle. There were also a ton of tables in the middle of the track, but because so many people were there, we ended up having to sit at a checker table near the side. Once we walked around for a few minutes, we were ready to get our grub on.

The reason I found out about this specific food festival was because I follow Doughnut Plant on Instagram. They said that they were going to be at the festival with pumpkin, apple cider, and coffee cake doughnuts. Obviously that was one reason to go. Their delicious doughnuts are life changing and these were no different. They were serving different types of each flavor. The options were cake, yeast, or doughseed. We ended up choosing the cake doughnut because it was said to be the most dense.

Look at this perfect specimen. The lightly toasted pumpkin seeds on top. The small amount of pumpkin glaze that covered this doughnut. It was packed with pumpkin delicious flavor. The doughnut was so moist, which was nice because the texture was very cakey, but in a good way. It was a small doughnut, but it was perfect to split with Carrianne because we wanted to be able to eat as much as possible. My other roommate ended up getting the Apple Cider yeast doughnut and it looked amazing. She gobbled it up. Oh how I love fall flavored treats.

Next up was Asia Dog. I’ve been wanting to go here for a while now. I missed out on going at Smorgasburg, so I was kind of bummed out. When I saw that they were having a stand at the Grub Street Fest, I knew that I had to go get one. I have an obsession with hot dogs. I think they are such a classic American treat. So delicious. At Grub Street Asia Dog wasn’t serving up their typical fair, but instead they were doing corn dogs. Even better.

I ended up getting the tonkatsu with beef dog. You can get the corndogs if you go to the store front, but at this festival they were only serving them and not their other treats. This corndog was covered in a panko crust and served alongside was katsu mayo dipping sauce. It was amazing. I feel like panko crumbs make anything taste better. The mayo was a like a sweet Asian honey mustard sauce. It was awesome. The crunch of the outside was perfect with the softness of the inside of the dough. The beef hotdog was a perfect combination with this corndog breading.

My roommate who is vegetarian ended up going to this delicious looking pizza place. The funny thing was that I had bookmarked this pizza place on yelp, so when she let me have a slice of her pizza I was in heaven. The crust was thin like it is in Italy, so when you picked the piece up it flopped down. The cheese was delicious. It was huge slices of mozzarella all over. The sauce was also evenly spread out through the crust and not that much on the pizza. I’m not a big fan of sauce, I really just enjoy toppings, so it was my dream pizza. I will definitely be going to this pizza shop.

Now to the best thing of the whole day. Little Muenster. Yet another place that I had bookmarked on yelp for a must visit in the city. Oh how I am perfect at finding the best places. I ended up getting the beef brisket grilled cheese. It was the best grilled cheese I have ever had. The beef brisket was moist and tender. It pulled apart as you bit into it. The cheese was melted so well. It pulled in strings as you pulled it out of your mouth. The bread was toasted perfectly. It was crispy, but not burnt. This is the best comfort food.

Carrianne ended up getting the squash grilled cheese. It was delicious. We ended up swapping half of each of our sandwiches for one of the other. That way we got to enjoy both of them. This was a good vegetarian option. It had a ton of different cheeses and it was topped with butternut squash. There could have been more squash on the sandwich, but otherwise it was perfect. I will definitely be going to their storefront whenever I need a nice warm grilled cheese to brighten my day.

A Late Night (WIAW)

Hey ya’ll! Sorry I have been all over the place, but school is crazy right now. I have two labs where I have to go in later in the week in order to check on bacteria growing. Maybe I just love bacteria cultures so much that I actually do this for fun instead of for class? No, just kidding. I’m not that nerdy. Anyways it is time for my favorite day of the week: What I Ate Wednesday. Shout out to Jenn for coming up with such an awesome idea!

Look at those bad boys. Pumpkin Belgium waffles. Yes, I definitely scored that morning before class. My amazing roommate has a waffle maker! I just recently found this out even though I’ve been here about a month. How slow am I? Obviously I am definitely going to be taking advantage of this. I realized I didn’t have a lot of ingredients though, so I threw these waffles together.

Nom. These were amazing. I used some bisquick gluten free pancake and waffle mix, threw in some almond milk, egg substitutes, and canned pumpkin. Topped it with some banana slices and sugar free syrup. Delicious. I was so full that I didn’t have to come home in between classes to make myself a snack. Success.

For lunch I had a black bean burger that had black beans, garlic, red pepper, oats, onion, and a few other goodies. I placed the patty on top of some chopped lettuce and topped it with some dijon mustard.

This was a delicious meal. Due the large amount of fiber in the burger because of the oatmeal and beans it was super filling. It had the right amount of spices added to it, so it wasn’t just a plain tasting burger. I will definitely have to make these again sometime soon and topped with onions, tomatoes, and avocado. Mmmm. Can’t wait.

On Monday it was Rosh Hashana, which is the Jewish new year. I spent it having a nice meal with my dad’s side of the family at my grandparents new house. It was actually really delicious. I mean the chef was beyonce’s chef for the summer in Marfa, TX. Obviously I’m a true diva now. He also cooked for Johnny Depp, but Beyonce is just way more fab.

Since I’ve gone vegetarian, I could not eat any of the meat that the chef had prepared, but I did not really care. Instead I had a pile of vegetables and a rice dish. The vegetables included grilled eggplant, squash, onions, some broccoli, a salad, a carrot pudding, and some peppers. The eggplant was by far my favorite thing. I really want to get the recipe to recreate it because it was just that good.

I even made my own gluten free challahs to bring for myself to eat. Obviously I didn’t eat two entire challahs. I brought one to the dinner and I froze the other one to bring to my apartment. I ended up eating about 5 pieces to go with my vegetables, so I would have a substantial meal. The challah actually turned out pretty great too. My mom and I were worried about how it would come out because the flour is completely different than regular flour, but I thought it was quite delicious. I’m still enjoying the challah right now, microwaved, and topped with raspberry jam. Delicious.

Hope everyone has survived halfway through the week! I can’t wait for the weekend, but not really because I will be doing a lot of studying. Anyways I have to get back to writing my epigenetics paper. Boo.
